Class T458.1 (later Class 721) was introduced in year 1962 and together with other diesel locomotives and new electric locomotives it have sealed the fate of steam locomotives that were gradually being retired over course of 1960s and 1970s. The locomotive is scaled up and more powerful version of Class T435.0 from year 1958. Apart from use in Czechoslovakia, these locomotives were also exported to USSR, Poland, Albania, India, Iraq and East Germany.

In past 20 years most of these locomotives were retired, but despite their age some of them are still used in active service, notably as shunting locomotives of the ZSSK , a major passenger trains operator in Slovakia, or by various smaller private railway companies. Unlike museum owned locomotive on photo, these are usually not so clean.
