Description Phew, took longer than I wanted it to take (because of work getting in the way...gawd I hate that place now), but its finally done

Jake Sully as an "avatar", a human/Na'vi hybrid from James Cameron's Avatar.

Started out with a rough sketch in photoshop that took about 10mins using a photo reference, then started to add some rough black and white values all on the same layer as the sketch to define the shape.

After that I continued to shade, blend and add more detail before creating an overlay layer and adding some quick base colours and then merged them to the black and white painting. Ive finally conquered painting from greyscale to colour WOOP WOOP

Once it was turned into a colour painting I really worked at the detail, colours, shading and worked out the kinks in the proportions.

The final touches where stuff like the glowing freckle things, which were done on a seperate layer so I could add an outer glow effect before merging them. Also added a little bit of noise to give the skin some much needed texture and it looks AWESOME

Oh yeah and theres the background I did, pretty nifty for me, all done on one layer All of it

hey can you give me some advice? and here is a few questions.

1. You used photoshop correct? and if so did you use your mouse or the pen pad thing or something else?

2. can you give me some constructive criticism on my art it would really be appreciated

mad-dragon249 In reply to Officer349 [2010-11-28 16:07:26 +0000 UTC]

Sure np

1. Yep, I used photoshop with a wacom bamboo graphics tablet. If your gonna do some digital painting and stuff, Id highly recommend getting a tablet, it makes things alot easier and flexible than using a mouse, since you've got the added ability of pressure when painting Doesnt have to be an expensive one, for the first two years I made do with a £15 cheap one off ebay

2. Course I can will comment on your work now

Wow, I really like how it came out! At first I though that it is a traditional watercolour piece. Also , I like the composition, and how you painted the background to set the scene in a specific setting (well, duh... ), but you did not detailed it too much to focus the attention on the character. A job well done

Thats pretty awesome dude! I love it, btw, could you give me some tips of how u did the transition from greyscale to color on photoshop? I'm trying to master that as well!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mad-dragon249 In reply to L3gacyW01f [2010-01-21 00:12:49 +0000 UTC]

Hey thx Painting from greyscale to colour is a right bother, but I managed to do it by first doing the painting in greyscale, then create a new layer on top and painting over some base colours. You gotta give a few layers settings a go to see which one works best, overlay, lighten, soft light, and hard light might do the trick. Might also want to lower the opacity of the colour layer a tiny bit if the colours look too vibrant. After that I merged the greyscale painting and the base colour thats on top together, and from there its just easy painting as you add the rest of the colours, textures and details

Oh i see.... so thats how people do their beautiful paintings, a layer on top of another.... and then merge.... Thanks I finally get it! cheers!
