Oh and I forgot: up to Win7, the windows update can also be either disabled, or you can instruct it to download but wait for you to install the patches: in the "Control panel", under "Windows updates". On the left, you should have a menu item called "Parameters" or something like that.
And from time to time, if your disk isn't an SSD but a standard hard disk, defrag it using "My Defrag": download.cnet.com/MyDefrag/300… (I'm using it, in particular the Monthly script, as it's the thoroughest one)

All my problems were due to the fact that my motherboard was compatible with Vista. It went more or less smoothly with Win7 but wasn't supported under Win10 (it's 6 years old)
So that I had to rebuild a whole new PC.
If90% of the RAM is used by windows update, you may have another problem, because the process by itself is not that much RAM hungry...
- don't you have too many programs starting with windows?
- have you enough free place on C: (if it's where Windows is stored)
- be sure that all the RAM installed is used (in the limits of the motherboard capabilities, of course)
The blue screens of death are more often caused by two cases
- either you have a driver that is not functioning correctly
- or you may have a problem with electrical contacts
In that latter case, for example it could be a RAM stick, or the video card.
If you are adventurous enough, you may unplug the computer, open it, and while touching the metallic case remove carefully each stick of RAM and the video card, clean the contacts with an old teeth brush, blow the dust out, and carefully replace each component. Just be sure to put the same stick in its original place (don't mix them).
This process should be done once a year, or more depending on the environment (dust, smoke, etc...)
That's why my computer is installed in a case that has a dust filter in front of the fan that pulls the air in.

My PC is also 5 or 6 years old (Win 7), I normally clean the fans/RAM/etc every month or so (lots of "dog" sucked in), always defragged, never more than 50% full on C: and it ran perfectly until "Windows 10" was released .
Everyone I know who has Win7/8/8.1 started to have similar problems, then I found a video on youtube (you should read some of the comments) : it was the windows hosting services "svchost.exe" (+90%RAM) and even though I had updates switched to "Ask" it was constantly running the windows update process "wuauserve"... This week I've been manually detaining "wuauserve" (not possible to terminate it) and it appears to be working fine again....So basically IT IS Microsoft illegally sabotaging the system, trying to force me to upgrade
It's a horrible corporate controlled world that we are living in Y-Phil!

Honestly: I'm not astonished...
And if your system can support Win10, the upgrade is free.
If it's not the case, you may have to move your win7 to a new motherboard/cpu system. For example, if you buy an i7 4790K, it's two years old, and for that reason: a lot cheaper, while still using the same RAM sticks, the choice I did.

Dear friend, if you feel paranoid, take care of you, don't use a cable TV, throw your car away if it's equipped with a GPS, destroy your mobile, stop using the Internet, avoid the big stores, think to take your money ouf the bank always at the same hour, at the same place, or we could learn something of your life...
Do you know that you are looked at while working?
Just kidding...
As soon as we don't use a self-made browser, we are looked at. Each social network is collecting datas, DA included.
I've even heard that even the huge electronic panels diffusing advertising could be used to target you and your habits while passing near, thanks to the gps or the mobile. You could even receive targeted ads on your mobile while wandering in a city...
Honestly, I don't mind: if they have nothing better to do than looking at me, they've got a really sad, sad, sad and so sad life...
Speaking of self-degrading windows installation: I have an old pc (2009) running Win7 on an old amd phenom x4 processor. It uses ddr2 RAM!. Win7 boots really faster. Even running at 3Ghz, this is a slow beast, but it runs ok.
It has the option to upgrade to win10, but I'm still not sure about it... In French, we call this kind of PC a "farm tractor".
The windows update is still active and doesn't eat up the ram...
I really suspect that you could have something either nasty or that needs a fresh re-install.
Is the Windows Events journal showing up something special?

Yes - I think there are some definite advantages to displacement maps and even (gasp) bump maps.
Glad to see you're thinking of cranking up some more 69th work - I see you've since posted a new one!

Nice to see the 69th up and about again. Always believed they add a spot of much needed colour to a dull day in Victorian London!

All thanks to you and radaVid , I just pressed render.
I was cleaning out the directory where all the files from the past 4 years are kept (+40GB) and I noticed that almost 20GB belong to the 69th, seems such a shame to waste all of those materials/models ...
