Description This is the unedited version of my entry for the Llumina Press Susan Kay Phantom cover contest. The final cover design had some color changes and words added in Photoshop but for now I'll post this version.

The two side panels represent Erik's warring personas as the Angel of Doom and the Angel of Music and were meant to have a stonecarved, statuesque appearance. In addition the skull face of the Angel of Doom could represent Erik while the feminine features of the Angel of music could be Christine - that's up to interpretation. The central panel, of course, is Erik, the Phantom of the Opera himself, with a full face mask and white rose. A lot of the more subtle shading was lost in scanning but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out overall.

Original Lineart sketch can be seen here: [link]

All traditional media: Pencil, acrylic paint, colored pencils, conte crayon

Phantom of the Opera belongs to Gaston Leroux, Phantom the novel belongs to Susan Kay.

What a beautiful piece of work! Even though you said some of the detail was lost in scanning, I can still see the hard work put in!
You say that this is for a Phantom Cover Contest? Does that mean this book will finally come back into print and I'll be able to buy it?!?!

This looks great. I love the angels on either side, and the colors you chose to shade them in. Your shading looks very beautiful, in the way you've chosen different colors to shade with. Excellent work, great textures in there too.

Cowabunga...

This is some superb work, as always. I particularly like the balance of the neutral-colored, statuesque personas against the full-color Erik. Gorgeous symmetry in both concept and execution.
