Leaving aside the fact that the brother/sister thing is headcanon, Shining Armor asked his baby sister to be his best mare. So there's certainly precedent in the Sparkle household.

Well, ya got me on that one... Only, I didn't look at this comic as it having anything to do with that episode. It might have, but it doesn't state that. I read it as a random day where the girls did their thing and left the little brother behind. As a little sister I can state for a fact that I generally did not do stuff with my sister and her friends and at no point did I feel left out because of it. Once in a while I did stuff with them, but I had my own friends, why would I want to hang out with hers? I've always felt the anger at the girls for not dragging along Spike to be silly. Spikes smart, If he wanted to tag along I think he'd ask to me included.Β

The thing I hate is that the writers choose not to involve him. They can orchestrate the characters' relationships however they want, and they choose to keep the character I root for the most--with a goldmine of untapped potential--out of the picture.

The idea that Spike and Twilight consider one another family is pure headcanon.
Twilight calling Spike her friend, on the other hand, is canon.
So it's far more reasonable to expect the show to treat him like her friend than her family.

True, but Twilight raised him and nurtured him. At best she treats him like a little brother at worst a pet that sleeps at the end of her bed. Which would you prefer?

The evidence for Twilight raising Spike is mixed at best. On one hand, in Dragon Quest, she says he was given to her as an eggβimplying they've been together ever since. On the other hand, in The Ticket Master, she has no idea whether or not Spike's been to the Gala beforeβsomething you'd expect her to know if they grew up together.
She does seem to act as his guardian occasionally, but that could just as easily be explained by his being a squire or apprentice as it would be by him being a younger sibling. And whatever their relationship is, he spends as much time taking care of her as she does him.
At best the show treats Spike as Twilight's friend and confidant. At worst it forgets he exists in waysΒ that make the Mane Six look like awful ponies. I very much prefer the former.

He was given to her as a egg. And he hatched him too. Its how Twilight came to Celestias attention after all. As for the gala, Twilight avoided the gala it seems. Spike though was a bit more gregarious. I think Twilight is the type to have gotten invites in the past but blew them off and Spike may have gone stag or not.
I honestly think she treats him like a little brother. One old enough he can take care of himself but young enough that he needs attention on occasion.

Their relationship is too ambiguous to pin down with a single label. (I thought everyone understood this by now; it's bee five fucking seasons!) So there are reasons to include him things that demand friends be present as well as things that require family to be present. Unfortunately, this provides just as many excuses to exclude him from both, and content providers--both fan and official--bank on that shit.
