Description
Old drawing I left unfinished, then decided to finish it yesterday afternoon.First time using pastels
Looks a lot better in person.
Entered in the John Howe monthly theme challenge, and WON amongst others!!!
Holy crap! This is what John Howe said about this drawing:"Lastly, I chose Mother Sea, for the ethereal depiction of theeternal poetic theme of music announcing the dawn. Two very diifferent treatments and themes, but both very lovely."

Well, these pastels are in the form of thick pencils, so that might have helped a bit.
It helps to build up layers - starting with the lighter undertones and then continue applying darker tones to achieve the desired colour. That way it doesn't look flat. It also helps to use paper stomps for blending. Fingers tend to make it look like Dopey sprawled himself across the paper and took a pastel bath.

Yeah, I've been having trouble getting the tones I want.
Like, the first thing I attempted was an apple, and I couldn't get a dark brownish read for the life of me.
I just am no good with colour. Dx

Thanks! I'm thinking of submitting it in the Illumination theme challenge on the JHFs...but i'm not sure if it's 'illuminated' enough.
