Description

That was the last winter. Everybody was anxious, rumours about the raiders from the south, that we never had heeded much until now, seemed to be more ominous with every day, and the wispers never died down, as if carried upon an unwholesome wind.

And they came. One morning someone screamed, then everybody screamed and scrambled, picking up the few essentials we had, rounding up children and horses, and I saw my children and my mate getting ready to leave while I was frantically looking for my horse.

There was some ill luck on us that day. I ran up a small rise to look around and finally, finally I heard a painful neighing and saw her, down at the frozen creek, in a splatter of blood. I ran down like mad, found her trashing, but unable to rise.

Someone had cut her hamstrings, but had a mess of it, I was out of my mind, I struggled like crazy to calm her down so that I could... end her pain.

I was utterly shocked, could not even move, from exhaustion, sight of my dead horse, the raiders, and the fact that someone of us must have done this. They took me like a dumb animal, numb and docile...

Posts.

Beautifully designed. Simple and effective. I'm curious to see if we find out who maimed her horse though reading from the comments below it appears to have been the shaman of the tribe.

I'm sure it's that Pojar that hurt the horse!

Anyway, wonderful picture! With these colors and the painting effect, it's almost like she was on the sea during a storm.

I think there's not much difference between those plains and the sea.

I must add that Pojar had very little choice, he was really stuck between a rock and a hard place. I feel pity for him, for he won't get over what he did for the rest of his life. He can't tell and nobody can take the guilt from him, even though he just tried to save the others.

"I think there's not much difference between those plains and the sea."

I can say that I agree with that statement.

What you said about Pojar redeem him a little, it must not having been an easy thing to do and not been an easy thing to live with.

But for the case of the abducted woman, I'll quote approximatively Fry from Futurama: "It was maybe one life to save the universe, but it was my life!"

Ha. I'm tempted to take the bait of the last quote and put up some walls of text.
But then I remembered not to indulge in theory.

Let me tell you of the days of high adventure.

Let's say it's a complicated topic with a lot of grey area and that the need of the many is often at the expense of the few.

Or to say it simpler: It's impossible to please everyone.

You can't argue with the last sentence, in any case

No, the danger is rather that I start ranting about the post modern navel-gazing and that the Heroes Journey got us nowhere and stuff like that, and really nobody wants to listen to that

Tis whole series of images are just stunning! Such beautiful work! Again your composition and POV. The frozen, bitter land reflecting the bitter and sad moment in the story. As Tinnuien says, they would make a wonderful artbook of the story

Magnus-Strindboem In reply to Kibosh-1 [2019-10-14 13:14:03 +0000 UTC]

I hope you like the story... even though were coming back to the darker parts...

I was really surprised how nice the frosted grass turned out here. Sometimes you have an idea for a picture and some stuff just won't work out, but sometimes (like here) you're lucky.

Anyway... I experimented with the prints section here on DA... but they don't have anything into the artbook direction... which is actually a bit strange, since they do have calendars... and I thought they call themselves an art site

OneOut [2019-10-14 04:00:34 +0000 UTC]

Is the hairy metrosexual from the last picture done this? Although I can’t imagine how he, crouching with a crooked grin, crawls between the legs of horses and cuts tendons.

Most likely, one of the natives did this after talking with him.

Thank you. I like how it turned out, though I notice later that I did not even change the camera rotation from the last picture. Doing things in a hurry... but it's a long story, no time to slow down

And yes, things are going somewhat downhill (or maybe not...)

As you said caastel . This postwork gives a Charles Russel* flavor to the scene.

*Russel is a famous 19th century American Painter .
