Description k, now i really need to do some uni work.
Officially the longest i've spent on a drawing. Cant say exactly how long this has taken, but its at least 6 or 7 hours over a few days. Pleased with him though.

So its a big bad ork, with huge easterbn influences. Who'd have thought an ork could look good in japanese stylee armour, eh?

Dedicated to my big bro, who was a pretty good orky general back in the day; those bygone years when we used to do games workshop.
I don't care how geeky anyone thinks that place is, its a damned good hobby and has influenced many of the greatest fantasy artists in the UK over the last 10years or so. My work certainly wouldn't be half as good as it is without years of reading codexes and white dwarfs

enjoy anyway folks.

Very good work dear lad! I'm trying to draw myself. Just curios, how did you learn to draw?
That orc is very impressive. (y) Cheers

It's nothing more than will and practice. If you enjoy drawing enough to do it in your spare time you will improve and gradually learn new techniques and ways to improve your work.
My interest began in primary school, when i was around 8 i guess, and it was always something I did in my spare time. It's taken me years and years to get to where I am now, but one of the great things about art is almost every drawing you make will show a little improvement. Sometimes you get a breakthrough and take a big step forwards, but it's always rewarding.

When I teach drawing there are a couple of techniques I try to push that help improve people's observational work - i guess I might do a tutorial of these one day as there is a lot to explain, but for more imaginative work, the key to a good drawing is usually in the details. Scratches and cuts, dents, nuts and bolts, all sorts of little 'impurities' and items that make a drawing look accurate.

Thank you very much for your reply. Well I like to draw and I try to draw every day.
Right now I'm in a dip. I've watched so many how to draw tutorials and such that I'm stuck. Every time I try to draw I'm so focused about drawing "flow lines" and keeping it anatomically correct. Any tips for how I can get out from this? It's really annoying because I don't create anything anymore.

Thanks for reply!

I'm in a rut too, so if I find an answer I'll try to share. I remember a stage when the quality of my work improved so much that i lost all the creativity to actually us the new skills. Was hard to work through, but I guess I just found fresh inspiration somewhere.
Maybe just doodle instead of trying to make finished 'drawings'. If an idea from doodling takes you fancy you can take it further and create a more polished image, but you don't have to worry about your outcomes the rest of the time.

I have more question before I can leave you alone.
When you've drawn a doodle sketch, how can you improve it?

This must be a strange question though.

Thanks beforehand!

P.S. I'm quite tired x)

I guess just make a fresh attempt at it on a larger scale. Really work into the shapes or features that interest you in the doodle. It will vary depending what the doodle gives you. Sometimes you can just find a little shape or outline that gives you a better idea, sometimes it is a fairly good image already and it will take a lot more work and a much more concentrated approach to turn it into a more polished artwork.

And I meant what the name of the game was..and it was Warhammer 4000 or 40'000

I don't recall

I like the 'comicky' style you followed here, using few but crucial details. Quite interesting, fitting the ork with samurai armour.

(GW inspired many of us, really. Right now I almost can't imagine any orks not resembling those from Warhammer..)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Maieth In reply to Vaitylos [2007-03-07 21:02:11 +0000 UTC]

yep. I think the whole thign was brought on by looking at my friends 'world of warcraft' artwork book. I looked at the orks and instantly hated them. They just looked so human, all the brute gone from them. So i went back to my roots
Samurai armour came about as a result of wanting to give him big-ass shoulder pads. I wanted them to be detailed, but not in a way that would look too decorative. I think that balance of detail and fuctionality really comes out in samurai armour. It always looks great, even though it is just armour, and mostly unadorned.
