He was surrounded by 9 benders, 3 water, 3 earth, and 3 fire.

It was just Mako against nine benders.

He was all ALONE.

The benders looked tough. Unbelievably strong. And nine of them? Could Mako possibly take them all on?  He was just one firebender against nine brawny benders.

'Okay. You got this, Mako. Stay calm." Mako got into his fighting stance. He crouched down a bit and raised his arms up to his face while scrunching his hands into fists. 'They are just some low life thugs. You've dealt with these kinds before.'

"Well looky here. Today must be our lucky day, boys! Bahahaha. First, we score a big payday from those stupid kids, and now we have the avatar right here! Served on a silver platter and delivered to our home, Triple Threat Triad territory," sneered the earthbender.

The mention of "stupid kids" made Mako even angrier; it reminded him of his brutal childhood. What if they were talking about Scoochy?

The benders began to walk forward towards Korra, acting as if Mako wasn't even there. Without a warning, Mako leaped into the air and threw a flaming kick into one of the waterbenders' face. She was thrown back several feet, smashing into the stone wall of the alley.

"Well well well. Seems I underestimated you. I even gave you a chance to run and hide like a good little dog. Must I put you on a leash?" The earthbender reached out and snatched Mako's scarf. Within a heartbeat, Mako twisted the man's hand until he was on the ground howling with pain.

"Don't. Touch. The scarf," Mako said menacingly. Before anyone else was able to stop him, Mako jammed his knee into the earthbender's neck. He was out cold.

"Oh boy, you are going to regret that!" yelled the firebender as he charged at Mako.

Mako sidestepped with such speed and thrust the firebender to the ground. The firebender rose back up and lashed back at Mako by elbowing him in the face. In retaliation, Mako grasped the firebender's collar and rammed his foot into the guy's stomach, hurling him backwards.

'Great. Three down, six to go. These guys were easier than I thought.' Mako was starting to get cocky.

"C'mon, guys. You scared?"

As soon as Mako said that, things began to go south. The benders learned from their missteps, and they all attacked Mako at once overpowering him.

Two waterbenders came at Mako instantly. They sent two blasts of water rushing towards him. Mako crouched down swiftly to dodge the first blow, but he was hit by the second blow that pushed him backwards a few feet.
It was now Mako's turn to counter attack. He started to hurtle as many fireballs as he could at the multiple targets, but it was only able to knock down one earthbender to the ground.  A firebender sent a blistering punch on each side of him, and his face became scorched.

"Yaro, go get the avatar," a waterbender demanded of one of the firebenders.

A firebender approached the knocked-out avatar, but Mako sprinted towards him and kicked him in the head giving him a concussion.  The waterbender who gave the order shot an orb of water to Mako's chest knocking him backwards into the jab of a firebender.

He was already struggling just to stay standing up. He was fatigued and already had some bruises, scratches, and burns.  His legs were wobbling, and his arms felt weak.

One of the earthbenders pounded the ground with a powerful stomp sending Mako into the air. Mako used the fact that he was airborne to his advantage. He dropped a fiery kick into the waterbender's face, but she countered with a jet of icy water.  Mako dodged swiftly and with cat-like reflexes, but he was stricken by the earthbender's unexpected burly blow to his spine.

Mako was shot to the ground. The pain was too much. Unbearable.
Excruciating.
Agonizing.
Tormenting.

He was bloodied and bruised, and he felt as if he could be knocked out at any moment. Could he possibly run away?

'No. This can't be like before. Not like how it was with mom and dad. My parents didn't die for me to grow up so weak. That was supposed to make me stronger!' Mako was trying to find his strength.  Slowly, he started to get up onto his scraped knees. Now it was time to get up to his feet. Almost there.

Without a notice, the firebender came and punched Mako in the face, knocking him down once more. Everyone just snickered at him.

Why couldn't Mako be stronger? All of his hard work. It couldn't go to waste. It just couldn't.

He looked inside himself, trying to find whatever source of power he had left. What could keep him going? He searched within. Deep within himself.

There it was. This is what he needed.

He needed this power. The power to keep on going. The power to fight back. Not like before, when he was just a kid. Now, there was no excuse to back down. He could beat them. He could.

He just needed that little push of motivation. What was on the line? 'Korra… Korra…' That's all he could think of. This wasn't going to be like before. It COULDN'T be like before.

'Why can't I just help the person that I-I… I lo-… I can't. I can't just leave Korra.
