You know, in musical is common practice to insert the main song of the female character at the beginning of first act. A blatant example could be 'I dream a dream' from Les Mis, but also 'Part of your world' from Little Mermaid covers the same space in the plot. The public learn who the character really is and is supposed to get fond of her, since she reveals her past and her dreams for the future. Mmmh, why am I talking about this stuff anyway? Well, because almost all I know about storyboarding came from musicals (both old Disney movies and theatre shows) and Andrew Lloyd Webber is probably my favourite person on this planet alongside HPL.
Digressions aside, it isn't' my intention to make you feel sympathetic to Mrs. Phillips. Actually, I just want to say that Howard's grandpartents were absolutely gorgeous ! Whipple was a successfull busisnessman AND an estimator of gothic fiction, while Alzada was an astronomer, a woman of science *^*!  I'm sure Sarah was adopted. There can be no other explanation D:
A common misconception about HPL is that was the death of the father to deeply traumatize him, but actually was that of his grandparents. The strict bond between Howard and Whipple is clearly expressed in many of his tales featuring a nephew-grandfather (sometimes uncle) duo of protagonists. 'The Silver Key' is a good example, as well as 'The Shunned House' where the protagonist's uncle is named Elihu Whipple.

Speaking of Mr.Whipple Phillips, I also want to inform you that the information I give in the comic about his death is incorrect. Lovely Lovecraft is set in 1902, when the good old fellow was still alive. I DELIBERATELY anticipated his death for the sake of the plot U_U

The way Sarah treats her son, you don't have to worry about us finding this harridan "sympathetic".

Finishing up "The Shunned House" today is actually what prompted me to reread this story from the beginning. That's an interesting tidbit about Whipple, and I still find this story intriguing on the second readthrough.
Awesome job! And happy Halloween!

Che pagina fantastica. In particolare trovo la rappresentazione degli incubi molto ben riuscita, e il piccolo Howard è sempre più adorabile. Complimenti.

Yay!! New page!

Little Howie is probably one of the most adorable cartoon things ever! I feel so sorry for the poor thing! His grandparents seem so loving and awesome, and his mother is so cold towards him, no wonder he's disturbed by nights gaunts! I love the way you draw them! Howie's grandparents look lively and whimsical, and Howie's eyes when he's mourning have a tear-like shine to them. And the Night Gaunts look awesome and really quite terrifying! I applaud you! *cheers and claps*

I feel a bit guilty that my only comment hitherto on this page has been a quibble about language. Because there's so much to like. For instance, there's a natural progression through the page from light to dark, as it seems to me: the first frame is lit with a heavenly blue glow, but the next two frames are darker and then the last frame is in complete darkness except for one candle.

Sleep has long been a problem for me. There have been times in the past when I've been afflicted with night terrors; thankfully I seem to be in a quiescent period in that regard and my dreams have been relatively peaceful. Nevertheless sleep is still something I regard as an enemy; insomnia rather than sleep seems to have become my usual state. So, unable to sleep, I'll read as long as I can, either reading until I can't keep my eyes open or listening to something--preferably, and I am not joking here, to the Lovecraft podcast--until I fall asleep listening and then wake up a few hours later with an earbud still tucked into my ear. Hence I am entirely sympathetic to young H.P.'s method of reading until he can read no more.

The reason you probably lump the 'musical' numbers together with this is because of your art-style. I could easily see this being converted into a animated musical films at this rate. As a person that loves and performs musical theater on a monthly basis (though I prefer Sondheim over Webber 8P ) I understand what you mean, though it never crossed my mind that yeah, usually the person who gets the first song is a lady!

It's funny though, since Nightgaunts must have deeply terrified Lovecraft if what you've written here is right. They always struck me as being some f the most harmless (beyond the tickling) creatures of his, and in most games like Call of Cthulhu are almost /helpful!/

I enjoy this, a lot. It makes Lovecraft seem like more and more of a person than just a 'figure and author'. Even if you're 'smudging' facts, like with his grandparents, the fact is that you are building him as a character which is far more important. I'm sure the real Lovecraft wouldn't mind too terribly much if you changed just a few facts around for the sake of a good story!

Another musical-lover!
It's nice to hear that, for I figured this project as an animated series since the very beginnig. It's more of a shortened storyboard than a proper comic, or at least that's how I see it .
Well, Sondheim is a great composer too, Sweeney Todd and West Side Story are both in my personal top ten. But yeah... ALW OWNS MAH SOUL.

As far as I know, Howard started to dream about nightgaunts after the death of his grandmother, due to the mournful atmosphere which prevailed in the house. It is true that they are not dangerous creatures, since they won't kill anyone and just dragged the victim in a turbulent flight, but doing this, they show chilling places to their hapless passenger. Basically, they're the ones that lead you to horror, not the source of terror themselves. I think that if they're almost friendly in games like CoC is due to the role they play in the Dream-Quest. At the beginning, they scare Carter to death and make him lose his way but then, thanks to Pickman's "mediation", the nightgaunts became Carter's best allies (along with the Ulthar Cats ) and it's only thanks to them if he reach the peak of the Unknown Kadath.
I always interpreted the whole story as the overcoming and acceptation of Howard's childhood fears, or at least that's the general meaning I want to give to it in my comic :3

I'm glad to hear that too. Most fans tend to consider him as a "mythological figure" not that different from the Gods and demons he created. It is true that his life was somehow obscure, but I prefer to look at him as the strange man filled with talent and contraddictions I've always think he was.
Uuuhm, I'm not that certain of your last statement, he was very picky when it came to historical accuracy XD

"I always interpreted the whole story as the overcoming and acceptation of Howard's childhood fears"

This. This right here! It is easy to see Lovecraft's life and changing viewpoint through his work. How he slowly became less terrified of the world around him and saw it as more of a place that could have its own wonders. I attribute a large part of that to his wife, who did her best to broaden his horizons and help him explore the world in her own way (though he never did learn to love New York City XD). Even he admitted that Innsmouth was 'too much like my old stuff' when he wrote it--him realizing that it was very much in he old way of xenophobia that he used to be. It wasn't the man he was anymore and I think it takes a great amount of personal know-how to realize when a story isn't 'you' anymore.

All the Humans in this seem to be woobies, dahling, so I wouldn't worry too much about intentionality.

But Whipple and Alzada are fantastic, and this certainly adds a new dimension to Sarah... Jealousy of her own parents, of all things!

I mean, on top of all the mess with Winfield, of course.

"Hospitalization in psychiatry" doesn't make scene, did you mean psychiatric hospitalization?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

monoceros4 In reply to itypeslow [2014-01-13 17:11:43 +0000 UTC]

I'm also uncertain whether the term "psychiatry" would have been used in this context at all. The word was already known and there were journals of psychiatry in existence (e.g. the American Journal of Psychiatry) by that time but it's not clear to me that the word "psychiatry" saw much use in the early 1900s outside of academic publications. In searching on Google Books for mentions of Butler Hospital--the hospital in Providence where Winfield Lovecraft was confined--in old sources, I'm finding that the terms "insane" and "insanity" were used very frequently. The Hospital itself was commonly referred to as a "hospital for the insane". Lovecraft himself in his fiction used the now-obsolete term "alienist" to refer to a doctor who specialized in mental illness.
