Description
I was pretty happy with last week’s episode of MLP:FIM, and I really liked Moondancer as a character.
I’ve mentioned it before here malimarthemage.deviantart.com/… but I enjoy that the show has some good foil characters to compare and contrast with Twilight as the main protagonist, not only who she is as a person but also her title and responsibilities. These include not only ponies like Trixie, Sunset Shimmer, and Starlight Glimmer but also the Princesses.
Characters like Trixie, Sunset Shimmer, and Starlight Glimmer provided alternate attitudes and philosophies which were external conflicts for Twilight. However Moondancer provided a “what if” scenario, forcing Twilight to reflect on her own actions rather than those of others. It showed that every event has positive and negative consequences, no matter how important they may be (like saving the world).
I feel that the episode could have easily been very average with the moral being the difference between true and false friends. I was happily surprised that it instead focused on this more self-reflective conflict, and one that looked back so far in the events of the show (all the way back to the first episode!). It developed Twilight a bit more and gave more insight into her pre-Ponyville past, which I’m always interested in.
Also, I know some people don’t like Moondancer’s design because she’s basically just a re-colored Twilight, but I think that adds to her character. She really seemed to look up to Twilight and it makes sense that she would emulate her somewhat. Though I liked her hair a little better when it wasn’t up in a ponytail.

She looks like a mix of twilight and fluttershy.

I agree that this episode was a gem. It was obvious when you saw them in school that Twilight and Moondancer were kindred spirits. I think that her design depended on the eyebrows and the hairstyle to differentiate the two of them, though I wonder if her bangs should have been pulled back bit farther. Still though, she's a charmer.

Sorry, that was part of the original file name that I forgot to get rid of here.

Even if she's basically Twilight with glasses, that episode made her one of my favorite ponies. Possibly my new favorite. I just really liked her subtle complexes and cat-ladyish personality XD Plus she seemed really sweet and FELLOW NERD PONY!!!
Wasn' fan of the sweater in the ep but I like how you did it for her. Looks less "itchy" ^;w;^

I don't know if I'd call her my favorite character, but I do like her because she's basically how the Twilight from the Equestria Girls world seemed like at the end of Rainbow Rocks. I've heard EQG Twilight was featured in the trailer for the new movie coming out this October, but I try not to look at trailers and spoilers anymore so I don't know if she's any different now.
I actually kinda liked her sweater. It looked well-worn to me more than itchy.

That's not good to hear, but I can say that RR was a pretty good movie. It was about twice as enjoyable as the first one I'd say.
I don't think he sweater was given an explanation. It was just there to provide contrast to Moondancer's previously Twilight-ish appearance.

I would draw her with her eyebrows, to make her more distinctive.
Hey, that's another thing to add to my pile of shame!

I was so excited to see Moondancer, she was a favorite pony of mine when I was a little kid.
I hope this means we'll start getting G4 Moondancer figures! <3 I never got a g1 Moondancer, so I want one really badly.. (g2-3 was the series that I grew up with, and g3 Moondancer doesn't even look like the g1 or g4 version)
it makes sense that Moondancer looks like a Twilight recolor (in a way) because Twilight was inspired (cutiemark wise) by Moondancer (among several other ponies). It was a nod to how Twilight's design was conceived. ..I think?

I'm a guy, so I never grew up with previous generations, and I only care about the show, not the merchandise. But I know what you mean. And I didn't know that was the origin of Twilight's mark design.

yes, Moondancer and another pony named Twilight (also from G1) inspired Sparkle's mark.
interesting note: G4 Twilight's mom looks just like the original G1 Twilight. Her father is a German exclusive G1 called Nightlight.

I knew about the Twilight originally in G1, and that Twilight's mom was based on her, but not Moondancer.

yes.
all the mane characters had several older ponies leading to their design (the mane six had around 6 or 7 older ponies leading their design, while Princess Luna had around 4 or 5, for example)
(except Apple Jack. She has been the same since the very beginning (G1)..except her g3 self. G3 AJ looks like Big Mac.)
