“Legs! Where we’re going, we don’t need legs!”

It’s been a little bit since did one of these last. I’ve changed the title from “Background Ponies” to “Ponies of Interest” (you know, like “persons of interest” or “points of interest”) to make it more relevant to this series’ spotlight nature, and because it won’t always deal strictly with background or minor characters. The numbering still applied, though, so it’s #3 in the series.

I was planning to do one featuring notable foreign characters, like Zecora or the Breezies, but when I saw Stellar Eclipse here in the recent episode “Trade Ya!” I thought a focus on fan-based characters would be better.

Wild Fire and Stellar Eclipse are rather unique occurrence in MLP:FIM, as far as I’m aware. The fandom has influenced the naming of minor and background characters before (e.g. Derpy) and helping to define their personalities to some extent (e.g. Vinyl Scratch), but very rarely is a character that’s not original to the show depicted. There are apparently a few more—most of which belong to show crew members—but Stellar Eclipse and Wild Fire are those that I’m most familiar with and are of the most prominently depicted. I would have included Derpy too, but she was included in my last one malimarthemage.deviantart.com/… and isn’t fully and fan-made character.

I’ll start with Stellar Eclipse as I find him to be a bit more significant. Stellar is the original character of Sylvain Lavasseur Portelance, who suffers from spinal muscular atrophy mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Stellar_Ecl… and this is reflected in Stellar’s wheelchair-like walking device. Apparently through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, he was able to both have his character included in an episode as well as voice him. I’m not sure if he’s dead, dying, or what from his illness currently, but I think this was a very nice inclusion by the show staff and, like Derpy, further illustrates the cyclically-supportive dynamic the fandom and MLP:FIM have for one another. I don’t know if I can name another show that has done this sort of thing.

Wild Fire is a little different. She is the original character and ponisona of Sabrina Alberghetti, a storyboardist for the show who appears in the episode “A Canterlot Wedding Part 1” arguing with a pony who is apparently her boyfriend/husband. If I remember correctly, Sabrina (a.k.a. ) stated in an interview that initially Wild Fire was not supposed to be included in the episode, but during the episode’s production the original pony wound up resembling Wild Fire quite a bit. For fun, it was persuaded that Wild Fire be used instead. Sabrina stated on Twitter she was intended to be included in a later episode (“Wonderbolts Academy”) but was denied to prevent staff-based characters becoming too prominent…if I remembered correctly. She was replaced by this character img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20… named Wild Flower.
