Awesome Leela is my girl! I can even imagine how many layers this took. The color pallate is the best kind of funky. THis is definately going in my Favorites.

I just read your article about the different Futurama fanarts, it was really interesting. I wouldn't mind owning one of those brain slug toys! And you're absolutely right, it's really difficult getting a drawing right when it's based on such a specific cartoon design. I made a ton of drawings of Leela and gave up several times before I came up with one I didn't hate. Glad you like this and thanks for featuring it on your website!

i cannot agree with u more, ive contemplated just even giving her two eyes bcuz it is so very hard to translate any type of attractiveness to her in a style beyond that of groenings, but i can say hands down, out of all the leela fan arts that arent in the original style, this is easily the best

mallaard In reply to GothicFeverDream [2009-02-06 23:42:37 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! You should still draw two-eyed Leela just because. It was weird how bizarre looking she was in that one episode where she had the surgery.

No prob dude, i think i def will just for the fun of it. I thought she looked pretty foxy, well shes cute either way, but something about it really didnt ring to her character. The eyes even looked almost too small.

I like the colours and the pose very much. And her expression is very nice to look at
my only question...ist she wearing any pants?!? Or have the pants and the skin the same colour?

mallaard In reply to Buci01 [2008-07-14 00:02:40 +0000 UTC]
She's supposed to be wearing pants, they just came out looking a lot like the skin when the coloring was all done. But if you'd rather pretend she's not wearing pants it's OK with me. Glad you like it!

Your right. The human expectation of an attractive person usually entails two eyes. Futurama suceeds in making Leela look pretty because it's art style is in the classic, simplistic Matt Groening way of doing thing. As the man said, he couldn't really draw when he was young, he just sort of doodled, and out of that came the fuzzy old Simpsons.
I love your fan art here, although, if I could make one change, it would be her expression, which I frankly don't feel fits her features, not to mention the mood of the work. Everything else is great, though.

mallaard In reply to Alex-Stein [2008-06-07 18:08:19 +0000 UTC]
I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "fits her features." To be honest I doubt Lela would be all that sexy if not for the great voice acting accompanying the drawings. I guess a more stern look would be fitting for the kind of mood this picture has, but I like the more positive look too. Anyway, I'm glad you like it for the most part.

You know what this picture reminds me of? It makes me think of that Jane Fonda movie Barbarella. I dunno, it's just the colors and stuff. It's got a really great, 60's retro vibe. Fantastic work!

I like the stuff-melding-into-other-stuff mentality of all seventies movie poster art, and it's something I should try more of. It's tricky to do it as well as those artists did, like Bob Peak especially.
