I always liked this Lois. Teri Hatcher had the attitude, but this Lois had the spunk.

Lois doesn't seem to be a big part of the Superman picture these days from what I've seen. This is the ideal Lois for me, even though she too got phased out during the Justice League seasons.

I totally agree.

Of course, my version of Lois Lane was a university student during the '60's who marched against the Vietnam War while Clark was a reporter, in the thick of it next to John Corben

But that's just me.

I've recently been reading some older issues of a series called "Superman Family," which I think covers the sixties and seventies-era Superman characters. It's fun stuff, a lot different from what's out now.

Personally, I despise the main DC continuity. So convoluted with (shudder) time travel.

Yeah no kidding. This whole "Return of Bruce Wayne" thing with Bruce stuck in prehistory for some reason is just ridiculous.

They should have a total continuity reboot. Hell, Marvel Comics, too. Frankencastle? yeahno.

I think this is what Lois would look like if drawn in the style of Mighty Max.
Hmmm... Lois on Mighty Max. Very nice mental picture there.

I never much cared for the designs for the superman animated series...

Until now. Whoa!

(It was just that since the supporting characters like Lois and Jimmy etc, wore the same thing again and again, it lost of bit on reality on the human side of Superman.)

mallaard In reply to StardustDragon [2008-04-07 02:24:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, most of the normal people in those cartoons are quite forgettable. I always liked Lois's design though, I thought the combination of mini-skirt and long-sleeve jacket was cool.
But Bruce Timm seems more interested in simple, streamlined designs than elaborate ones so I guess he skimped on some of the more interesting street fashion these characters would probably wear in real life.

Ok, sleek and simple, I guess I can understand that. It was more excusable in the Batman cartoons because of loose minds and "work" outfits.

But I like the spin you've put on her with the pose. Not to mention the background matching her clothes color choice. Your eyes go straight for her skin and... face.

I think you have a good point there. The sleek look naturally matches the art deco stylings of the Batman show, but when the DC cartoons started pulling away from art deco they looked less streamlined and more...plain. Of course by the time Justice League and JLU came around the art became slightly more detailed I believe.

Sex-ay! I always love the styles you have going on. Neat block-print feel paired with slick, vibrant colouring... works really nicely. That, and I'm a sucker for purple

I really enjoy how you draw fabric. It just rocks, plain and simple.

I've read that. On the Masters of the Universe DVD's, the show's creator's drop his name a lot, talking about how they were the only guys to give him a shot, and how proud they were of it when he went on to create Batman: TAS. The old guys from Filmation consider Batman pretty much the greatest cartoon ever made, another fact they mention a lot in the DVD interviews.

Bruce Timm also worked with John K. and Ralph Bakshi on the Mighty Mouse cartoon in the late eighties. John K. sites that as a major influence on Timm's exaggerated style, and also of those nice painterly still-shots they used in the earlier seasons of TAS.

mallaard In reply to Shane-Rodriguez [2007-12-10 21:18:00 +0000 UTC]

True, although they've come pretty close in some shots. They were always very careful not to do anything resembling a panty shot, which is ironic considering most of the super-women were always wearing hip-cut tights anyway, so what's the difference?

Shane-Rodriguez In reply to mallaard [2007-12-10 22:46:44 +0000 UTC]

so true. i think the closest they ever came was the episode when Superman was asked to prove a man on death row was innocent and it turned out to be a crooked cop. i forget the name of that episode but it happened when Lois Lane was on the stairs. -trinity

I think I prefer the Timm cartoon DC universe over the actual comic universe for the most part. I wish that series would just last forever. But oh well. In all from Batman through JLU it was like 15 or more years, so that ain't too shabby.

mallaard In reply to mallaard [2007-12-10 03:03:05 +0000 UTC]

Well we've still got the direct-to-DVD movies they're making. Death of Superman was pretty good and they've got more coming, although they're not directly related to the series storylines.

Oh man I know how you feel. I've been watching the DCAU since it began with just Batman and was sad to see it go during the final episode of JLU. It is amazing that it lasted that long but it would he been amazing to see it go further.

Well, quote from wrong series, but nice job.
Again you have that shiny thing going on again, very cool.

mallaard In reply to SirGrunt [2007-12-09 06:43:30 +0000 UTC]

At least this time I limited myself to skin and hair, two things that can conceivably be shiny. I left the cloth stuff alone. And yes, I'm very fond of hot reporters, perhaps my favorite breed of hot female. Smarts and looks all wrapped up in a tidy little mini-skirt and sport jacket (or in April O'Neil's case, a yellow jumpsuit).

Nice, I like the dark purple aspect of shadowing instead of black.

mallaard In reply to WoahItsKayla [2007-12-09 06:00:30 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! When I put this much black down in an ink drawing, I've started coloring it in Photoshop because that much black seems too harsh against these softer colors.

WoahItsKayla In reply to mallaard [2007-12-09 06:06:55 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome, I thought the same, that the black would be too harsh. The purple kind of adds a more feminine quality to the work too.

mallaard In reply to WoahItsKayla [2007-12-09 06:45:07 +0000 UTC]

For whatever reason I really like purple. The color of the drawing seems to change the feel of it a lot. A black and gray graphite drawing feels much different from a red or blue penciled drawing. It might be psychology, but it's probably super-magic.
