I'm ok ^^ I'm just going through a 'I hate my art' phase, where I'm trying different things and expecting myself to be as good as people who have drawn them for ages. I just can't seem to get much continuity in my work and it's driving me nuts D:

Haha artistic growing pains! Is it like teething? I like the sound of that ^_^ And I'm glad you like it! I kinda feel like I'm ripping off a couple of different artists' styles though and it's not really 'my' art. I don't like feeling that way :<
But yeah I don't want to draw the same thing over and over, but sometimes it seems like its those that do that are the most successful. I guess I'm still trying to find my art identity and what have you! Experimenting is fun, if frustrating at times! I always expect myself to be able to produce really good work and I beat myself up when it's not to the standard I would want it. Talking about that to my therapist xD

It's EXACTLY like teething! ... it takes time and not matter how much you stress about it, it won't happen any faster! - you just gotta break out and do something for fun that you're not too worried about to give you some rusks to chew on, then pretty soon before you know it you'll have some shiny new peggies, ready to munch through any artistic-meal anyone cares to serve you!
I hear what you're saying about the "ripping off" aspect, but the way I see it is artists like us tend to "borrow" and "try on" other artistic styles so that we can learn from the experience... - we might not keep everything we learn but when we take elements we like and mix it in with our other knowledge it becomes part of our repertoire of styles - wether you use them all the time or not it's important for a client to see that you CAN if you need to
"Repeating" is a dangerous game IMO.... (and by that I mean artists that repeat the same art style) ... some do it VERY well, and get very famous for it (because their STYLE gets famous) ... but many many MANY more don't. Their style never becomes the next big thing, it never GETs mainstream, so they're just always left at that second rate kind of level, even if their art might be just as good as those more famous. - Where repeater artists fall down is when they're approached by a client who doesn't WANT their style... one who wants them to do something else (and that's something you get a LOT in animation and comics) ..... it's just not possible for them. - That's when "chameleons" come in... and from looking at you're gallery I'd say you're MUCH more like a chameleon (like me) than a repeater... - Chameleons will get all those types of jobs, because people will come to us and say " I want something that FEELs like THIS" .. and we'll be able to do it. Simple AS. Think of the analogy of a hit-man with weapons' training... you choose to specialise in ONE weapon and be amazing, or you can learn several... you might not ever be the best sword-fighter in the world, but you're far more likely to have the skills to get the job done! - So in summary, SOME repeaters get mega famous, but most really struggle to pay the bills or find any clients worth their salt. Equally, a lot of chameleons struggle (it's the nature of artists after all!) but famous chameleons ARE out there!! - Take Claire Wendling, or Chris Ayers... they might not be on DA but those guys are both shit-hot at ANY number of different styles, and ANY client could go to them for ANY job! - At the end of the day there's no right or wrong approach, but I personally know I'd get bored SENSELESS of doing the same thing day after day after day... that's just not me. - I live, I grow, I develop, I explore, I evolve, I adapt... - why shouldn't my artwork do all those things as well ? ... to me, that's the REAL beauty of what we do.
Seriously though babe, bring back the fun. - Beat yourself up too much and you'll scare yourself off sketching/drawing, and that's no good for anything. - If you wanna chat or whatever give me a shout (I have gmail chat and skype, or there's always the good old fashioned dog and bone but I'm more of a txter than a talker on phones) ... we can talk through some techniques/loosening up exercises if it'll help. ... sounds to me like you need to find your equivalent of my "splodge doodles" to enable you to expand and experiment without pressure/fear of failure.
Anyways, enough rambling from me for now!! - Give yourself a break and do something fun! - developing Artistic style is a natural process and sometimes you just can't force/rush!
