Description
Sennelier watercolour painting of a cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) based on my own reference photography.
The cheetah is about the same size as a leopard, but stands 7.6 cm taller and is much less muscled (average weight of 57 kg). The cheetah is the fastest land animal and can reach speeds of ~112 km per hour over short distances (Sunquist and Sunquist (2002)). It is currently classed as ‘vulnerable’ on the IUCN Red List (Durant et al. 2015), and is distributed within southern and eastern Africa, and the critically endangered subspecies, the Asiatic cheetah (A.j.venaticus), is still found in Iran.
