Description Mary Magdalene from the italian movie "Gli amici di GesΓΉ - Maria Maddalena", or "Close to Jesus" in english language.

I choose her because the costumes of the movie, that represents really well the jewish nobility of the 1th century A.D.

I'm not a christian person, and I know so little about the christian's icons, but I think I know a little bit about her. So, let's go!

Mary Magdalene or Mary of Magdala, was one of Jesus' most celebrated disciples, and the most important woman disciple in the movement of Jesus. Jesus cleansed her of "seven demons", conventionally interpreted as referring to complex illnesses. She became most prominent during his last days, being present at the cross after the male disciples (excepting John the Beloved) had fled, and at his burial. She was the first person to see Jesus after his Resurrection.

Mary is one of more controversial women of history, some times seen as saint, others as a sinner prostitute (what is wrong, since the prostitute was not her but another Mary). And there is a lot of myths around her too, like ther relationship with Jesus (they were lovers? They married each other?) or the authenticity of her gospel.

In this movie, Mary Magdalene (Maria Grazia Cucinotta) was showed as a sinner, a rejected and abandoned noble woman, who loose her patrimony and becomes the mistress of a roman officer, just to suffer another disappointment when she see herself pregnant. After being beaten and raped by him and his soldiers, vowing revenge, she turns out to be hosted by Queen Herodias and her spoiled daughter Salome.
Herodias wants Maria seduce an important roman officer who can secure the throne to her and her husband, Herod Antipas. After seducing him, Mary leads to prejudice her ex-husband and her former lover, but after seeing that her revenge was able, she repents. Sorry for all the sins, she is welcomed by Jesus, who accepts her with open arms even if she does not feel worthy of it.

She becomes an eyewitness to the major events of the period, as the rejection of the first wife of Herod Antipas, so he could marry his sister in law (Herodia), and the death of John the Baptist, ending with the famous scene where she washes Jesus' feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.

Although the movie was somewhat boring, and the poor performance of the actress who plays Salome, is worth for the costumes.
I'm thinking in make one of the Herodia's costumes... We'll see...

Mary Magdalene is considered by the Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and Lutheran churches to be a saint, with a feast day of July 22. The Eastern Orthodox churches also commemorate her on the Sunday of the Myrrhbearers.

Wow! I really love this! I have a special connection to Mary Magdalene, because my name, Madeleine, means 'Daughter of Magdelene', i.e Marys daughter would be given my name. Her feast day is the 22nd of July, and my birthday the 15th of July.

Beautiful artwork! Thank you for bringing her to life.

Mary Magdalene was one of most emblematic women of history! I think she deserves to be in the spotlight, right?

My name is Mara, a variant of Mary. In arabic means "woman", in hebrew means "mistress" (like a teatcher). And as a variant of the egyptian name Merit, means "beloved"... Gorgeous meanings!!! XD
