Many evil or supernatural characters are portayed as left handed. This is probably because left handed people a such a small minority that many were afraid of them because they're "different" and as such "not normal". This would also explain today's meaning of the word "sinister" as "evil", "ominous", "threatening" or "mischievous". Originally it was simply the latin word for "left"...
