Description Here's the first mock up of the Cargo vest. It isn't a terribly difficult garment to fit well, so I think I'll go straight from this to a working garment. Some minor changes have been made, some I'll make only once I adjust the patterns. This is the 3rd hood I've put on here and I think I'm finally satisfied with how it drapes and fits.

Now to get enough money so I can make the working garment out of a decent fabric.

Very nice, do you have a suggestion where to buy or obtain a pattern so one can make something similar to this ?

This is a pretty simple pattern. Look in the costume section of Simplicity, Burda, etc. and find a basic vest, add some length to it by making a parallel line to the hem. Then find a cloak with a large hood and use that pattern to make a hood for the vest. I recommend making a mock-up out of cheap sheets or other scrap fabric to make sure it fits how you want. when you're satisfied, then you make it out of the real stuff.

I have always though of having a go at a similar thing myself. Seeing you have a go at one really does help.

Yeah, the hard part is getting the pattern right so the garment fits well, but once you've done that it's just a matter of finding good fabric and sewing it up

Thanks! And it's an added bonus that they're actually really comfortable I'd take these over a pair of padded running shoes anyday.

Leather? Canvas? Denim? It strikes me that this should be made out of something durable.

I'll be keeping My belt a bit tighter, though. And, cool shoes, by the way.

When I make dusters (which is what my local group of LARPers consider this style) I am way too lazy for that shoulder seam you got going on there. If I ever want to make an epic one for myself though, I'll have to keep that in mind.

Yeah, definitely makes it fit better along the shoulders.

Marcusstratus In reply to Sarazarus [2011-04-08 18:03:20 +0000 UTC]

Well, right now, as I'm developing the garment, I know it's not going to be below $200

Ooh, very nice. Incidentally, hypothetically - as I'm low on funds and won't need this for a few months yet - would you know how to make a gambeson? I'm needing one for a re-enactment society and I can't for the life of me find one ANYWHERE online that is actually historically accurate for our period.

Marcusstratus In reply to optical-jackson [2011-04-08 18:36:04 +0000 UTC]

really? What time period are you reenacting?

have you seen these websites? [link] [link] and hmmm... where's that one reenactment site I'm looking for...

optical-jackson In reply to Marcusstratus [2011-04-08 19:58:26 +0000 UTC]

I'm having trouble finding something deemed suitable by my society's regs for a 12th century levy. Scottish? *clicks both links*

Marcusstratus In reply to optical-jackson [2011-04-09 20:36:36 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I don't know historical clothing that well to know what a specific gambeson would look like... I would imagine there's texts on it somewhere..

optical-jackson In reply to Marcusstratus [2011-04-09 20:59:31 +0000 UTC]

From what I gather, I'm not allowed the likes of buttons or leather straps. The stitching has to be vertical, and it has to be undyed or sort of mustard-y. Reaches just above the knees, open at both sides up to the hip or so to allow for movement. Sleeves to the elbows, medium cut on the neckline. Either made from multiple layers of linen, or one padded layer.

But thanks for your help anyway! And as I've said before, I adore seeing your work in my inbox.

Very good start! Great length and volume. What kind of fabric do you have in mind?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marcusstratus In reply to ScribbleFox [2011-04-08 04:51:03 +0000 UTC]

I'm going to be lining them with a thin but dense fabric like a twill and the outer layer will be a heavier weight fabric like denim or canvas.

LOVE the big hood! I can never stand that about a lot of modern garments - the hoods are too damned small. If it doesn't pull easily to the tip of my nose, it's not big enough.
