The first assignment in my Concept Development II class was to take a sport and make a small clothing collection inspired by it. I was to make 3 complete outfits in all. What was turned in were 3 boards I assembled and then presented to the class, before submitting them to the instructor.This is the third board, the Flat board. This shows all the technical details of each garment. Where the seams are, specific placement of style lines, etc. These are left plain white so that it's clear what is going on in each garment. This is also the sort of thing you see on the back of commercial pattern packets that show what the individual garments look like.
Flats sketched on paper over a template and then scanned in and traced in Illustrator for nice clean lines. Then I put them all in Photoshop and compiled them in one image.
What I should like to change if I ever have the mind to would be to make all the flats to scale to each other so that the viewer can get an accurate idea of the size of each garment.

These were made in Adobe Illustrator. Expensive software, but the best... used the computers at my old school...

bottom row #4 from the left: that's an intriguing garment. And one that i might rather like to try my hand at making... is it something you came up with or is it an actual type of shirt with a name?

the single sleeved jacket? It's actually called a Plastron and worn during fencing to provide extra coverage for the side that faces your opponent. My version is just a more street friendly/casual version.

hm... i just spent the last 2 hours looking for a pattern for one (cuz i'm retarded at making them) and i cant find anything... >.< so annoying... cuz i'd so love to have a shirt like that xD

Well, just find a slim fitting jacket and then cut the pattern from one shoulder to the hem, taking off a sleeve and a side. That will give you your starting point. With new designs that you're playing with, it's always good to make a mock-up out of cheap fabric first, to test the fit of the garment and make sure everything is proportionate before cutting it out of expensive fabric.

I just really love that long coat design. Incredible. You've done a great job on capturing the style of fencing, i think, and put a great bit of flair on it as well.

No no no, the views you see here are front and back, so they only cover one half, or more like 3/4 of the body if you want to get technical. They're inspired by this fencing garment [link]

The teacher is telling us that each corner needs to be a 90degree angle...which is rather frustrating.. is that what you've been taught as well?

You mean in the patterns? or in the technical images? Because corners do need to be 90 degrees on patterns so you don't get points and valleys where you want flat areas.

I don't know what you mean then, the only thing I can think of making sure it's 90 degrees is when I make half the garment and make sure it's 90 degrees at centerfront so when I copy, paste and flip the other half the two ends meet up nicely.
