Description The sculpture was created in Sculpture Genereator 1.
It's a program created by Carlo H. Séquin, UC Berkeley. Here's a link for more info:
www.cs.berkeley.edu/~sequin/SC…
Rendered in Vue6I.
I wanted a sculpture that was simple and elegant for this scene. The hardest part was tweaking the materials to get them realistic as possible. It took a while for me since I'm learning as I go, lol.
Also I used a Dosch extreme Hi-res (6250x3125) HDRI.
I think next time I'll use a much lower resolution HDRI for the lighting and just use a JPG for reflectons and backgroung. My 5yr. old hyperthreaded 3gig P4 with 2gigs RAM took forever to render this simple scene.

Anyway Sculpture generator a so fun and easy to use! Maybe I'll post some of the complex shapes soon.
Thanks for viewing. I'd appreciate some serious critiques if your up for it.
Also there's a much larger copy of this available in the download. Hope you like it!
Thanks.

It's really realistic and stunning. I like it so much. I have had some effort by that software of Carlo H. Sequin. I had a problem that I did not finally understand if the basic shape that sculpting starts with, is always that simple form or can import new basic forms to start with. Do you know the answer? Is there any other basic shape to start with there in Generator software?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mark-Tamaro In reply to mehrdadart [2009-12-06 04:54:12 +0000 UTC]

There are no other basic shapes to start with.

However if you go to where you have Sculpture Generator installed and navigate to the "bin" folder and then the "demo" folder, you'll find 20 text files that you can open revealing parameters for various sculptures.
Just match the parameters in Sculpture Generator!

Also a google search for Sculpture Generator parameters will turn up many more.

As far as I know there is no way to "load" a file into this program.

You can however "export"!

Simply select "export" then name it.
Don't forget to add ".stl" to the file name!!!
This will save the file to the "bin" folder within the program.

I'll be happy to help if you get stuck or have any questions. Don't hesitate to send me a note!

Have some fun!

Thanks muchly for your complete and useful description. How can open or convert .stl files? For example MODO doesn't import them (fuck). One of my friends said that he has tried and 3D Studio Max has imported this kind of file. I searched the web to find a nice free convertor but did not succeed. Any idea?

Try MeshLab: [link]

It works for me AND it's FREE!

I mostly use 3D Object Converter: [link]

It's not free but it's inexpensive and I recently converted slightly over a thousand dxf files into obj in a matter of minutes!

As one who has spent 30 odd years fabricating sculptures in metal with organic shapes like this,I can tell you it would be an arduous fabrication, but entirely lovely...
Most metal sculptors would CAST a shape like this, probably in bronze),which on this scale is OK,but I prefer to fabricate everything,so when I see this shape I think of how I could put it together with pieces of formed sheet (like stainless).
That's why I say,"an arduous task". Worthy for sure ,but many long hours of work...

Mark-Tamaro In reply to ou8nrtist2 [2009-11-27 06:30:21 +0000 UTC]

This would look fantastic in formed sheet!
I've seen some of your creations. You do some killer work!

I definitely have to learn how to use some of those programs.
I have Modo (and some others)but not enough RAM to run them properly.
They would certainly augment my work...

Haven't heard of this sculpting program before. The results seem to be amazingly good, though! Although, the specs that your PC has, and the time it STILL took to render is something that has put me off completely. I sincerely hope the render time is cos of Vue, and not cos of the mesh created by Sculpture Generator..
btw, since u've seen my 3d work as well, I'd like a bit of help on improving my lighting and environment if possible. Word of caution - my pc is 1.5 Gig RAM with a 2.66 GHz P4.. so most of my work is rendered using Hypershot.. I use V-Ray once in a while, but then it means that to render a brush-metal sphere with a spotlight takes bout 3 hours!! Any help would be most appreciated, thanks!

Mark-Tamaro In reply to Inquisitor-No-7 [2009-04-30 07:20:08 +0000 UTC]

Mostly the long render time was due to the very large, hi-res HDRI I used. It ate up a lot of RAM.

Not sure how much I can help you. I'm a beginner myself. Send me a note though and I'll see what I can do!
I used Hypershot very briefly a few months ago. There are some tut's on youtube and some at their website.
I've never used V-Ray, Maya or 3ds either.
Anyway, send a note and I'll try to help, okay?

I do all my modelling in Rhino myself, so never used Maya or 3ds either. But you do get a V-Ray plugin for Rhino, so it comes in handy. V-Ray is quite nice that way, being designed to give you good control over the light and environment (by this, I mean atmospheric effects. It's quite good to get metallic finishes for stuff, although if you want superbly realistic glassware and refraction stuff, try Maxwell, which I guess you should be able to find a torrent for it somewhere, since it's damn expensive to buy professionally here in India!

I bought a Maxwell license on Ebay a few months ago for roughly half price. The guy was an architect and had a studio with several licenses. I haven't really had the time to learn it yet though.
Judging by your modeling you've got Rhino down pretty good!

Hehehe!! Thanks a lot! But I bet you'll never believe that I cannot do mesh modelling for nuts! I do everything in NURBS (or more accurately, solids), although there are limitations, of course! I have been experimenting with surface modelling, and will put the work soon.. jus hope it comes out good..

great "rusty" feel to the texture by the way, have you tried another render engine other than vue?

Thanks TJ. Yeah, I've played with Maxwell a bit. Just haven't had the time to really get it down well yet. I have several other programs too such as Carrara, Bryce, Mojoworld, Modo, Silo, Xenodream, trueSpace and a few more. For me Vue and Modo were relatively easy to just jump into and get started. But like I said...wish I had more time to spend...

Could you describe exactly the steps you took? and what happened? Maybe I can help you sort this out with a few more details. Just send me a note okay?

Ok, I download the zip file, extract into a new folder, then go into the bin folder and double click on the .exe file, then it gives me the same error( Application initialization failed - can't read ''errorInfo'': no such variable), i click on ok, and opens the program( small normal window named 'generator' but missing any sort of menus). That's all i can tell you really.

Tommy, I've sent a zip file containing Sculpture Generator to your hotmail addy. Unzip the file to your programs folder then click on generator.exe. It's in the bin directory. You might want to create a shortcut to generator.exe and rename it "Sculture Generator". Place the shortcut on your desktop or in your start menu. Let me know if you still have any problems. Or if it finaly worked. I'm glad to help any way I can.
PS all the files you need are in the downloaded zip. But if you poke around the site a little bit and follow some links there are lots of other goodies too!
