Description
This is an illustration I did many years ago when I had an idea for a children's picture book about a little boy going to a Japanese grocery store with his grandmother. The book never got any further than this one illustration, sadly! I was always pleased with how it turned out, though.The original art is owned by Mayumi H., a longtime supporter of my books and comics; she's here on DA, actually, so maybe she'll have something to say about this. ^_^
Students of Japanese will notice a little hidden Miyazaki reference: The boxes on the lower right say "Tonari no Totoro," the original Japanese title of My Neighbor Totoro."

everyone use pc coloring ( me too :> ) okay its a cheap way to color
but the old way is the best good job

haha I like this picture! The carts way to big for a Japanese grocery store haha. When I lived there that's one thing to get used to, not buying food to stock up with, because the cart was small and the fridge was small!!

This always reminds me of walking through the corner store in Kyoto where my grandparents lived. The print is in my parents' house, and my mother often comments that it makes her feel a little bit closer to home when she looks at it.

Aww, such a cute picture! Definitely made me think of a children's storybook when I first saw this. It's adorable!
It was also clever how you slipped some hiragana and katakana into the illustration. The first thing I read and instantly knew was the sign hanging up in the back, which says "sushi".

Interesting. Well done. I really like how this came out.
You know, one thing that I always found interesting, is how Japanese seem to like to maximize. They're really efficient, I guess. It just seems like everything is always crowded and stuffed (neatly) everywhere. Like the Shounen Jump...I can barely seen anything on the cover of that, and their lunchboxes that everyone always draws in the mangas are stuffed to the brim (neatly). Is it true they're maximalists to a point?
