Thank you, and i'm sure you could draw one and do a brilliant job at it. I practiced on my ape portrait and got all my mistakes out the way on that one

Thank you I thought the eyes were very striking on the reference, they showed the pain of old age.

Not to act like I know better than you because that's a laugh, but shouldn't the lines around the mouth be finer?

markstewart In reply to Joilieder [2011-08-19 17:22:54 +0000 UTC]

You have sharp eyes, nothing gets past you lol . From the nose down I have just put a rough foundation on for now. I stopped work on that part because i want to add the neck first which is dark, that will help me tonally to do the chin and mouth better. It's the most complicated part of this image. When i blend that area it will push back the lines (Hopefully) if not i'll lift by dabbing them with a kneadable eraser. That's tomorrows work all planned out

you're welcome It's nice to explain how i go about things. Some artists can start at the top and work down a pic in a methodical manner, and i have no idea how they can do it. I can't use grids either. I spend about an hour at the beginning of a session going back over my previous days work fine tuning it before continuing on to a fresh part. It's easy to miss thing though so i have a photocopy of my drawing with notes on it and circled areas as reminders for me ( i have an awful memory)

At this stage of a commission it usually takes me around 7-8 days, but you sir. . .take the biscuit! I'm mesmerized by how you've captured the subject's eyes! The depth to her aged skin texture is beautifully executed! Very skillful indeed Mark!

Wow! Looking good!
I'm drawing more with stumps lately, too. They really add a valuable extra tool to the arsenal, don't you think?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

markstewart In reply to LilaeaBluecoat [2011-08-17 20:15:43 +0000 UTC]

I found myself using them less and less so i intentionally did this to get them used again. I hope to explore them a lot on this one and find out what they are capable of. They do add depth to flesh when used right, or so i've seen on other artists artworks

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LilaeaBluecoat In reply to markstewart [2011-08-17 20:18:26 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! And they can be much more subtle (when needed) than any light pencil stroke can accomplish I've found. Especially for folds and wrinkles!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

markstewart In reply to LilaeaBluecoat [2011-08-17 20:25:48 +0000 UTC]

I have to be more disciplined to keep one sharper to vary the wrinkles sizes. They feel really nice to use on the smooth paper though.

I always keep some sandpaper nearby to sharpen them in between uses.
