Description
The most recent addition to the Japanese Cosmo Navy is the first dedicated flak escort class, designed specifically to fulfill a supporting role in fleets and battle groups. This small, highly specialized design reflects the changes in spatial warfare anticipated by Japan for the coming decade.
Technical Specifications
General
The design of the Mikura-Class is wholly based on its purpose to serve in a larger fleet. As such, the vessel includes accommodations and supply reserves capable of sustaining its crew for long-term deployments, even though the vessel itself will require a functioning support line in the fleet to retain battle readiness.
The vessel is also equipped with communications- and command networking systems to be directly linked into a control- and command node of a fleet-wide network to ensure efficient real-time communications.
Armaments
The Mikura retains some ship-to-ship strike capabilities in the form of two forward facing torpedo tubes and a sizable set of twelve missile launchers, which can be fitted with any anti-ship ordinance. However, the main armament of this craft is clearly the seven turreted kinetic Flak & Point Defense cannons, which allow it to most effectively engage other small craft, drones and aerospace fighters. This main capability is augmented most suitably by equipping swarm- and interceptor missiles.
Defenses
To allow for the impressive capabilities of the Mikura's armament, the class sacrifices a lot of defensive capabilities inherent to destroyers and other vessels of the same size. Despite its small profile, the Mikura is not as agile as comparable destroyer-class vessels, and its armor is even weaker than that. For protection, it relies heavily on the capabilities of the unit it is attached to.
As a result, the Mikura sees practically no deployments outside of dedicated task forces and larger battle groups.
Tactics
In battle, the Mikura takes its position usually along the flanks of the main formations, filing in between the ranks of cruisers and battleships. Ideally, it stays protected from direct incoming fire by its guardian vessels and can safely acquire targets among incoming missile salvos, autonomous kill vehicles, and strike craft.
History
Considering the recent introduction and high degree of specialization of this class, the Mikura has been built in large numbers. As its usefulness is restricted to its place in large battle groups, it's production is directly tied to the Japanese Cosmo Navy's future plans for overall expansion.
