Description The Mirindran Type-V Habitat is an example of advanced Starfleet infrastructure introduced around the turn of the 23rd and 24th centuries. By recreating a substantial area of artificial landscapes and planetary biomes, this type of habitat provides the foundation for a sizable space-borne colony.

General Information
Designed to recreate many benefits of planetary colonization without the expenditure and draw-backs of settling a natural M-Class world, the Mirindran station structure is largely centered around the circular habitat section. This shielded ring provides a vast area of an open landscape on two distinct tiers, which themselves can be divided into highly configurable sections. Theoretically, this division allows the Mirindran to accommodate up to thirty distinct environments with varying gravity, atmospheric conditions, flora, and fauna.
Supporting these habitat sections is the outer ring, housing the necessary machinery and facilities devoted to environmental control and maintenance. Power generation, administration, communications, and further utility systems are located in the external spire.

Mission Profile
The further layout of the station is determined by the specific purpose of each station. Variations of the Mirandran Type-V range from dedicated population centers with additional modular housing and services, to nature preservation and research posts with extensive research laboratories and precisely monitored biome districts.

Starfleet maintains several Mirandran Habitats devoted to long term evolutionary studies and preservation projects of otherwise extinct species. The second most prominent use of Mirandran Habitats is their involvement in large-scale testing of terraforming projects. In both cases, the extensive and precise control over artificial environments is the station's greatest asset.

Several major Federation member worlds utilize Mirandran-Habitats or similar installations to accommodate the embassies of species evolved for atypical or extreme environments unsuited for most other species. These include low-gravity environments, toxic atmospheres, and aquatic habitats.

History
Early plans for Mirandran-type habitat stations were presented by Starfleet's Research and Development branch as early as the mid-23rd century. However, progress on the project was delayed as limitations in shield technology were seen as too much of an obstacle. While the construction of a Mirandran type was considered technologically feasible early on, the extremely high safety standards of the Federation called the long-term viability of such a large open habitat space into question.

Nevertheless, the prototype, Mirandran I, began construction in 2260, not as a project of Starfleet, but under the supervision and with significant backing by the Tellarite government. At the time, it was even rumored the entire undertaking was part of a much larger argument between the tellarite guilds of engineers and the Federation council, conducted quite literally 'for the sake of argument'.
This prototype, still without the external spire and only one habitable ring-section, took almost fifteen years to complete and became itself a testbed for multiple new shielding- and force-field technologies. In 2275, the upper habitat ring of Mirandran I was finally initiated and recreated fifteen distinct environments modeled after major provinces of the Tellarite homeworld, plus one of the most hostile desert territories of Vulcan.

The design would not be fully adopted by Starfleet until the turn of the century. However, by the time the first Starfleet variants of the Mirandran Type-V habitat officially entered active service, there were already six Starbases based on Mirandran-type stations created by the Tellarite guilds for various member worlds.
