Description

The Stenka-Class, official designation Project 20510M Tarantul, is a class of fast near-space patrol craft built and operated by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Succeeding the older Svetlyak-Class, this modern vessel is slowly replacing older variants across various SSR navies and soviet orbital forces.
Design and Role
Patrol boats of the Stenka-Class are designed to carry out a variety of missions, such as patrol operations to prevent violations of near-planetary borders and to protect friendly vessels and facilities from criminal incursions and hostile actions. They are not intended to engage in conventional military operations, however, but rather as enforcers of soviet spatial dominance in secured planetary systems.
The Stenka sacrifices range and adaptability for raw firepower, boasting an impressive anti-ship capability for its size. Anti-Ship missile launchers allow the craft to pose a significant threat even to larger combattants, allowing it to effectively deny battlespace to potential opponents. Its two fixed forward cannons provide a more sustainable means of countering lesser threats.
History
Going into the 2280s, the Red Fleet of the USSR remains embroiled in its massive fleet modernization program carried over from the previous decade. Production delays and bureaucratic hold-ups have plagued the monumental task of reforming one of the largest space borne forces of the Orion Arm. While a lot of media- and propaganda-focus was set on the introduction of new flag- and capital ships, the true reform takes place in the minutia of logistical hubs, supply chains, and minor vessels performing day-to-day operations at incremental degrees of higher efficiency.

The introduction of a new patrol craft is neither as glamorous or risky as work on a new carrier-battle-cruiser, and remained consequently overshadowed for the longest time. When the announcement of the Stenka was finally made, the first production line was only months away from early deep-space trials. What could have been nothing but a footnote in history, turned into the saving grace of the reformation program when delays made planned celebrations of major successes impossible. In the end, the Stenka was introduced with much fanfare, as a convenient poster-child for the otherwise halting progress of the reform.
