The skyward vessels of the High World's cities brave the domain of the Blistering Sun. Mistress of all their gods, she stands above the pantheon and punishes all who venture too far and too high. This was recorded in countless myths and legends and confirmed many times over by the grim fates of early skyward pioneers. Balloonists and gliding flyers, even too daring mountaineers often bore the scars of the sun upon their return – if they returned at all and were not devoured by the pure and burning light.
Many things have changed in the new Dawning Age, but not the fire of the sun. Consequently, the height a vessel makes on any journey is a good measure for how daring an officer stands at its helm. There are still too many instances of reliable machines falling out of the sky to deny the danger of the high skies and their blistering light. But as the new shores of new worlds come into view beyond the falling seas, human curiosity once again also turns upwards to the sky. What would the first explorers find if the unthinkable was achieved?
