Description

On long journeys through the void, unknown worlds are seeded by the pioneers of humankind. Exploration vessels send probes and automata stations to asteroids, comets, and dwarven worlds alike, sparking lights against the encroaching dark of oblivion.

Most of these lights will be temporary, however. The ever-changing cosmos shifts and turns before the very eyes of stargazers, rendering knowledge and chronicles obsolete before long. Active probes and stations decay, if they are not renewed. For this reasons, many missions the pioneers must undertake are to restore the dim lights illuminating the unknown, before they all go out.

Generation after generation of fearless pioneer machines are sent into the dark, their frozen husks accumulating on the worlds they brought into the light. While many fall victim to natural causes or equipment failure, and in such cases can often be recovered, every other probe befalls a more unusual fate. Some exploration vessels end up spending years following trails of lost probes and sensor stations, trying to decipher which powers are behind their vanishing.
