The raindrop was not alone; it was accompanied by quite a few friends. It had been raining earlier that morning, but the weather report had promised clear weather for the rest of the day. The meteorologist who compiled that report had been a tad optimistic.

“Follow me!” Gemma shouted as she broke into a run. “If we make our way back to the main street, we can flag down a taxi!”

Sophie followed close on her heels. By the time they had covered a dozen yards, the rainfall had escalated into a downpour and the temperature had dropped precipitously. They were both dressed for summer weather, and were soon soaked to the skin and feeling rather cold.

The rain greatly reduced visibility, and the pair soon got turned around as they navigated the maze of alleys that led back to the main thoroughfare.

“I think it’s this way,” Gemma declared, ducking into an alley. The doors of shops lined both sides of the alley; they all seemed to be closed. They reached the far end of the alley and discovered to their dismay that it had deposited them in an enclosed courtyard.

A sign beside one of the doors that opened onto the courtyard read ‘Fine Art Gallery.’ There were lights on inside. “Let’s duck in here and wait for the rain to subside!” Sophie suggested.
