Description DRAGONS!

Dats right! Dragon. DRAGIN. DARGEN. DROGIN.

About an hour on this one in Photoshop, - maybe an hour and 15? Anyway, as with the previous few pics, just trying to draw stuff, somewhere between a study, sketch and a pic - this is essentially a doodle because it doesnt have much of a point other than what it is.

Hope you enjoy, let me know what you think - all comments welcome and appreciated. I am currently open for comissions at a reduced price, visit my journal for more info, any help is appreciated!

Cheers for all the recent support guys

Impressive! Never seen such an original shape and composition for a painting with the theme "Dragon". Nice one mate!

Chears!

Very nice artowrk! But to me it just looks a bit to "realistic"
Hopefully you want to check out my art and comment as well?

Okay, let me tell you something I don't like about your drawings.

Other than the roughness, which might well be intended, most of your drawings are small and limited. It's like you are presenting an object. Could pretty much be your intention, but I cannot think for a moment that it is sufficient to relate to an audience.

Take this image, for example. The main object, the dragonness, fills up the whole space. It looks like a cropped image. Yes, most of your work looks like cropped images. There is no setting. This is the problem.

This is what makes the roughness annoying. Many things go well in art and can be intended by the artist; however, there will have to be enough consistency for an average viewer to feel okay with what he sees, enough to accept calling it a "style". In your "cropped images", there is not enough space to give the feeling of consistency.

Interesting ...

I'll take on board what you have said, of course, but I can't help but feel this is more a criticism of me versus your own personal aesthetic criteria than an actual criticism of my professional abilities.

I have spent 6 years trying to find my own style - I have not yet found one, and I'm still working it out. Whilst I do not feel I need or should defend myself for the way I draw (it's a clichΓ© to say this but - you don't have to like it or look at it), I would ask you to consider more prominently the time spent on this and its intention - it is a "refined sketch", an experiment in contrast and colour (of which I am still trying to get to grips with), on subject matter I am not familiar with.

I could go on for a long time but I won't. Thankyou for taking the time to give input on my work - I only wish it was a little less bitter-sounding and more considerate to the fact I am still very much a learner.

Damn, I wrote too much then FireFox crashed.

umm.. I forgot what I was saying.

I can't believe this. Frustrated and confused, I lost all of my ideas. I'll sign out and go home and try to repost another day. Maybe my mind will function again.

Sorry.

Okay, I'm back.

I am aware that my words were heavily influenced by what you called my aesthetic preference, but I would rather call it my view on how art and humans interact.

It is a criticism of your professional abilities in that I find the outcome lacking in terms of appealing to an audience who is interested in more than the subject matter (fanart, dragons, guns, ninjas, etc.) Regardless of the style, the roughness which I personally like, your deviations seem to only offer a subject matter. The cropped-image effect says one thing: "Look, I have a dragon! Look, I have a woman! Look, I have a.. Cloud Strife!" Y'know. I just wish there is more to the piece than that; something which forces me as your arch enemy to call it an intended work of art that says something about you and your professional ability.

And if my words sound bitter for any reason at all, it is because I want you to keep getting better and better. I do like your work, and I want to give whatever two cents I have (I'm a poor guy, so I usually have much less than two cents to give) in order to help you find what you will eventually call your own style.

And we are all learners. This never stops.

Hrm, fair enough.

I have said in some of my previous pictures i've been doing recently that I have been practicing narrative, because im not very strong on it. However as I learnt from my year in the industry as a game concept artist, a lot of the time I was required to draw exactly one thing, and one thing only, in a very short amount of time and present it as nothing more than a depiction of the subject matter - it's an incredibly valuable skill professionally to be able to get an idea of a design down in under an hour.

At the moment, I am trying to develop my skills as a concept artist, quickly communicating an idea about the shape and form of an object/character/etc in order for it to be useful in a pre-production studio environment.

So yes, you're right in many ways - my art doesn't appeal to everyone - but that's not particularly new news. And whilst you look for more in art than subject matter (which i do too, i love all different types of art!), I'm trying desperately to get the right mix of doing what is needed professionally, what I personally enjoy doing and what I personally would want to look at myself. I hope that occassionally you like what I produce, but I just gotta keep drawing!

Thanks for the input

I wasn't aware that you are a game concept artist. This explains many things.

You are right. It is quite a task to do both what I want and what you want in record time, while also keeping yourself pleased with what you have produced.

I wish you the best of luck. Keep going!

This is certainly intense. Despite the detail on the wings not being as minute, the stance and the perspective lends a very good feel to the picture. You really should try to get into illustrating, I dunno, Magic cards or something, 'cause that's what this reminded me of,for some reason. xD
