After spend a night on the beautiful Big Sur coast, our next stop was to head north and east to Yosemite. I visited Yosemite about a year and a half ago and got some wonderful images, but I was not blessed with great weather. And by that I mean, it was sunny, with no clouds in the sky.

On the way to our hotel, just outside the park boundary, a freak winter storm appeared out of nowhere about halfway up the mountain. Cars and RV's went off the road and the road was then closed. There were also signs everywhere saying that tire chains were required to continue on. We pulled to a little shop that was selling chains and got the chains put on the car and then sat and waited for about 2 hours.

The road finally opened up and we proceeded to our hotel. After dinner, I thought I would take advantage of the winter storm and hope to get some great pictures of the storm clearing over the valley.

Unfortunately when I finally got to the valley, the weather was sunny and clear. I stuck around and took some photos, but decided to take my chances the next morning.

I ended up with another clear morning, so I moved on from Tunnel View and into the valley, finally finding myself at swinging bridge. As I stood over the river, I watched as chunks of ice just slowly made their way down the river. As the sun started to hit the tops of the mountains, I knew that I wanted to capture the motion of the ice, set again the frozen mountain behind Upper Yosemite Falls. To me, the last of winter washing away.

To create this image, I combined two exposures, an 8 second exposure and a 15 second exposure and blended them together to enhance the definition of the ice as it moved down the river. The Lee Big Stopper 10 stop ND filter was used to achieve the longer exposures.
