Description The Striders stood no chance against the predatory chickens, as these creatures were perfectly adapted for hunting megafauna. They evolved on another continent, separate from the long-necked descendants of humanity, and their environment forced them to become vicious predators. Instead of adapting to hunt the lumbering giants that evolved from parrots and rats using brute force, like certain canine species evolved to do, the predatory chickens decided to tackle them through numbers. Using their long hook-like claws evolved from what was left of their fingers, they would latch onto the victim and claw at them using their legs and beaks. In their own environment, with it's own much larger fauna, these creatures were still dangerous, but nowhere near what they would become in the new world. The two continents were on a collision course, and in between them was created a shallow sea that could practically be walked over, especially by the inhabitants of this low-gravity world and their elongated designs. The predatory chickens found a world of oblivious creatures that a gust of wind could topple and kill. Needless to say, what went down was a slaughter. Striders laying dead and dying, entire herds slain by a single pack. But, on their travels through these strange new lands were occasionally interrupted by sights of enormous paintings, painted over walls and cliffs. These art pieces depicted the daily lives of the Striders, the Qu who watched over them, and many other things. This inspired a few predatory chickens to begin adding their own touches to these, documenting their own daily lives. By this time, the Striders were basically extinct, with a few scattered populations being dwindled down by the predatory chickens. A few packs of predatory chickens chose their nesting spots near these large paintings, living in the shadows of creations of creatures they made extinct. This seemed to almost have an effect on the avians, making them more expressive, making them wish to draw their own art pieces. Eventually this evolved into language, and language into a civilization. They were already fairly intelligent, but their intellect grew as their society did too, going from packs to tribes to cities. Their clawed fingers evolved to be longer for easier climbing, and the front pair even adapted a muscle that acted like a thumb, since they started eating fruit that was widely available in this environment. With practically zero competition, their size shrunk, now standing at about 1.5 meters on average. These were the new rulers of this planet, not the humans, but their livestock and eventual downfall, now called the Aviosapients.
Their societies eventually formed a religion around the enormous art pieces left behind by the Striders, viewing the elongated creatures in the paintings as gods. This religion prioritized self-expression and art, as expressing one self was seen as a cleansing act that released negative emotions and spirits that came with them, trapping them in art pieces in a way, and the Striders were seen as divine beings that mastered art itself, ascending to a higher plain. Their society progressed in a way similar to our own, with expansion and conquest of the wilds wherever they went. Eventually the field of paleontology discovered the remains of their gods, fossilized Strider skeletons, with clear markings of chicken attacks. This shook the planet over, with religion becoming more and more abandoned, with fewer believers every day. The final nail in the coffin was, ironically, creatures coming from the heavens themselves. When the first contact ship sent by the Second Human Empire landed, it was a strange event. These creatures didn't look like them at all. Well, most of them didn't, but a species of lizards shared a particular resemblance to them. When the fossils of Striders were discovered by the Second Empire, contact with that planet's inhabitants became a high priority. But what they found was quite unexpected. This whole civilization of bird people was an extension of the Strider's primitive attempt at making one. And so, they were deemed the true successors of the Striders, and almost overnight, they became a part of the Second Human Empire.
This individual right here is taking a walk, trying to find inspiration for his next painting.

I'll be honest, I don't think this one matches my other works in terms of story quality
I'll let you be the judge of that tho, but I see it as a rushed mess
That's because it kinda was. I haven't uploaded in a few weeks and I didn't want to keep people waiting for so long
But what can you do? Better to have it out here for someone to hopefully enjoy than for it to rot in my brain any longer
Hope you at least found some enjoyment out of it
At least I think the art is good, but that's for you to decide
-Update: Reading this again, I actually kinda like it. I gave it much less credit than it deserved. Good job past me
These guys were pretty heavily inspired by the Saurosapients from the original book, I like the concept of another species taking the mantle of humanity, and I thought it would fit perfectly for the predatory chickens
As per usual, here are my other All Tomorrows works that I'm a bit more proud of

The next one will probably be a bit shorter, but it'll hopefully be better than this
