Description Most would call eating nothing but rotting corpses and defecating to show affection a disgusting, unhygienic way of life. And while the Bone crushers would disagree on the former, sadly the latter was a fact. A fact that was gonna be proven right in a big way. The growth of their cities was slow, but steady, and within a few thousand years or so, they went from simple huts to high walls and castles. Their tech was comparable to our own middle ages, and their culture was similar to that of Europe of the same time period, with a strict class system, monarchies, and so on. But eventually, this all collapsed. These large gatherings of people meant that more aggressive diseases could flourish, as when they killed one host, there was always more. And through the filth and rotting flesh, these new tiny killers infected people. While at first the outbreak was barely acknowledged, it soon spread like a wildfire. Terrified people fled the cities, trying desperately to avoid the plague. Eventually tribes of uninfected survivors were left alone in the wilderness. But these were not made to last either, as the leaders quickly tried to imitate the absolute power that the kings of the old kingdoms had over their subjects. This caused revolts and chaos, further driving many away from these communities as well. So it was then, that the last bastion of civilization fell, the last tribe killed off by a sudden outbreak of the plague in their camp. The only survivors were the ones that ran, far away from any of their old homes or each other. But they endured. Those that could eat raw, fresh meat and digest it more efficiently were less likely to get infected, and so they had a higher chance of survival, those who were stronger and had longer thumb-claws were better at fighting off predators and killing prey, he ones with sharper beaks and stronger bites were more effective hunters, the ones with better smell could find prey or even others of their species easier and so on.
Eventually, this produced a brand new species, the Axe-Beaks. They were hulking behemoths, even compared to their 3m tall ancestors, standing at 6m tall when standing on their back legs and 3m at the shoulders when walking on all fours. Their arms got muscular and long, so long in fact that they can now knuckle-walk. Their fingers now have huge claws, and their thumbs are now curved hooks for holding onto prey. Their beaks have increased in size and sharpened, and their ears became highly moveable to accurately pinpoint any sounds near-by. Their intelligence, while reduced due to them not needing it as much, still persisted as it helped them in hunts and foraging. They filled a similar niche in the food chain to Earth's bears, acting as gigantic omnivores, both hunting animals and eating tough fruit and nuts. They now have an instinctual fear of corpses and their smell, which some animals use to keep them away from their territory. Instead of defecating to show affection, they now have a complex system of pheromones inside of their anuses, allowing them to communicate over incredible distances, albeit in a limited way. They weren't hostile toward each other, but they didn't actively seem to seek out other members of their species outside of mating season. This is quite unusual, seeing as how it seems they retained other aspects of their human nature. Some have been seen carving pictures or arrows in trees, leading to food or water sources, seemingly for others to find and not themselves, and have even been seen sprinting to help other axe-beaks far away as soon as they smelled their distress pheromones. While they never rebuilt their old society, it was clear that their intelligence and humanity stayed intact.
After a few hundred-thousand years after the fall of their empire, the planet came to the attention of the Second Human Empire. Apparently sighs of intelligence have been spotted on the planet by a few scout drones, along with glimpses of large beasts, seemingly responsible for the signs. And so an expedition was sent out to investigate. The discovery of the Axe-Beaks was met with celebration, as one more piece of the remaining human species has been found. Scientists were shocked to see just how intelligent they are, being capable of learning sign language easily and solving puzzles with ease. Sign language was a useful tool, as they could not speak, and their pheromones were both smelly and not very good at explaining anything other than their emotions. So after a period of adapting to their new environment and learning about the wonders of technology, they officially became a part of the Second Human Empire, marking another victory for humanity as a whole.
This lad right here has recently been returned home from suffering a crippling injury during the defense of one of Empire's worlds from a hostile alien force. Little does he know, his far-away friends have decided to visit his planet and throw him a return party like no other. And right now they're headed to the beach. While he looks stoic and unimpressed, that's only because Axe-Heads can't use their faces to show emotions. But the smell around him shows he's having the time of his life.

I can't say just how sorry I am for how long it took me to get this one done and posted. But school has been slowing down my progress so I didn't really get a chance until weekend to finish it. Hope you like it, they were really fun do design
Also only after I finished the design did someone tell me they look an awful ton like a chalicotherium, and while I think that's pretty cool, it was completely accidental
Anyways, let's hope humanity doesn't go extinct by the time I upload the next one
