Description
I've elaborated this map about a possible and unrealistic division of Germany, according to religious group that is majority in each state nowadays. There would be three countries:- North German Federal Republic (Norddeutsche Bundesrepublik): a federal republic composed of states where Protestant people are majority; Schleswig-Holstein, Bremen, Lower Saxony and Hesse. Its capital city would be Frankfurt on the Main.
- Confederation of German States (Deutscher Staatenbund): a confederation of the states where Catholics are majority: North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Baden-WΓΌrttemberg and Bavaria. Its captal city would be Munich.
- East German Republic (Ostdeutsche Republik): a unitary state composed of current states where irreligious people are majority: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Berlin, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Saxony and Hamburg (as autonomous exclave). Its capital city would be Berlin.

I think Nuremberg and Franconia are more Protestant than Catholic. Franconia is part of Bavaria but it's not culturally Bavarian.

Probably you are right but I take each state as a whole and Bavaria is more Catholic than Protestant according to statistics.

Because it is in the heart of Prussia. I think Iron Cross does not have religious connotations...

Don't think Hamburg would be part of East Germany.
Not when a large chunk of their labour force comes from the blue part and people come from as far as half way to Bremen.
