Description More Yoshi fun!

It just makes so much sense to have Wart and Birdo included as Yoshi series characters. For one, Shy Guys are Yoshi's main enemies, and they're originally minions of Wart. Also, Wart and Yoshi are both big green reptilian beings with long tongues (well, I'd imagine Wart would have a long tongue, being a frog), they would clash well, and the series could use a villain that isn't also Mario's (well, hasn't been Mario's since his first appearance at least). And Birdo, she/he is often paired up with Yoshi in the spin-off games, and that makes sense too, she's a dinosaur just like him, she could maybe play as a rival throughout the game (perhaps Birdo could be something like Kamek to Wart, the character you see in each world throughout the game). I could also imagine very interesting egg fights between the two.

It's unlikely these characters will ever appear again in a main Mario adventure, why not let Yoshi have them?

I also put in those dinosaur friends that I drew earlier. They're a pretty fun bunch. Their purposes would be very animal buddy like, perhaps taking the place of the transformations of the original Yoshi's Island. I always liked the concept of Yoshi passing along Baby Mario from Yoshi to Yoshi, I'd like the same thing for these dinosaurs, Yoshi passes the baby to them, and then they pass the baby onto another Yoshi (except maybe the brontosaurus, he'd act more as a Dorrie).

I'd say this should be a game for the Wii U, but the only thing I'd change is the name. It should be called Yoshi's Island 2.

Here's why: the direct sequel to New Super Mario Bros. was released for the Nintendo 3DS as New Super Mario Bros. 2. New Super Mario Bros. Wii does not count as the actual New Super Mario Bros. 2 because it was a Wii follow-up. It makes sense to call New Super Mario Bros. 2 as it is becuase it was released on a handheld like its predecessor.

Now, I want to call your Yoshi's Island sequel idea Yoshi's Island 2 because:
1). Its heroes are just simply Yoshi and Baby Mario, instead of those other babies from Yoshi's Island DS (much like the first Yoshi's Island game).
2). Yoshi has NEVER had a home console game since Yoshi's Story.
3). The first Yoshi's Island game was for a home console, yet Yoshi's Island DS was a handheld follow-up.
4). Yoshi's Island DS was GOING to be called Yoshi's Island 2 before they changed it.
5). Music from the first Yoshi's Island could be re-used for this game.

Other than the name change, you seem to have such a phenomenal concept for a Yoshi's Island sequel that Nintendo would HAVE to put it on the Wii U. It's just my opinion, however.

1). Actually, for this game idea, in addition to baby Mario, there are the new dinoasaurs. And the mechanic here is tossing baby Mario from one dinosaur to the next, whether that's from a Yoshi to another Yoshi or a Yoshi to another dinosaur. Also, the mechanic would be used for multiplayer where several players on the screen can pass the baby from player to player to signify who the leader is. Once the baby dies, everybody dies, but whoever isn't holding the baby gets to survive (unless they hit lava, spikes, or fall in a pit), also, the camera follows the Yoshi who holds the baby. Perhaps the baby holder can play a role in cooperative puzzle solving as well, there's plenty they could do with it.
2). Agreed, but I chose the name "Yoshi's Island of Dreams" for two reasons. One, it's my own personal dream game, and two, the game takes place in a dream, where Wart rules over, just as he did in SMB2/usa. But yes, it being a direct sequel is preferred, I wouldn't dare say it's a spin-off.
3). Yeah, I'd like this to be on a home console, so it'd feel like a real entry into the series. But I don't think a numeration is required for that. But yes, home console with 3D cel-shading with an authentic crayon/colored pencil effect similar to the original Yoshi's Island. Still 2D sidescrolling though, of course, and similar mechanics from the first game as well, just with refinements and additions.
4). Yeah, good thing they changed that, eh? heh.
5). Yeah, old music returning would be nice, but new music would be great too. Select themes like the mini-boss music and the athletic music are some favorites that I'd love to hear again. But being a new game, I'd like to hear new main theme music, I actually liked the new main theme from Yoshi's Island DS, it was everything else that stunk (the cave and castle music was terrible in that game).

You seem to have a point on that. It was just my opinion, though. Believe it or not, I kinda agree with you. I just like re-using old/forgotten concepts that video game companies never used, such as characters, enemies, music, ect. That's all. Other than that, your dream sequel is top-notch.

I decided to call it "Yoshi's Island of Dreams", not exactly the same Yoshi's Island, but there's an island involved, I suppose. I'd want it to play more like and expand upon the themes of Yoshi's Island, as a sequel would, so I'd still want that relation.

2 years ago, I had came up with a concept for a Yoshi's Island sequel. Give me some feedback.

Story: Bowser feels as thoough he is becoming a poor role model to Bowser Jr., as he hasn't been able to take control of the Mushroom Kingdom.
So, He sends Bowser Jr. to Yoshi's Island to meet up with his old caretaker, "Kamek", in order to teach him how to be a better ruler.
Kamek teaches Bowser Jr. everything he knows about dictatorship, and with the help of his magic, Bowser Jr. manages to take over Yoshi's Island. He then proceeds to kidnap all Yoshis and Birdos, and keep them as his personal pets. All, but two.
"Yoshi Jr." and "Birdetta", a baby Yoshi and Birdo, were kept hidden during the attack. They emerge from their hiding place to find that all the other yoshis and birdos were gone. Here, we're introduced to a new character, "Chief Lo", who tells the to about what has happened. Yoshi Jr. and Birdetta were then determined to rescue their parents, and the others, but Chief Lo was reluctant to do so. Then, he remembered what yoshis and Birdos were capable of, so he then dec ided to let them go, but there was a catch.
In order to rescue the others, they must prove themselves worthy of the task. So, they are entrusted to venture through six worlds to obtain six "Dragon Stones", and present them to the chiefs of each world.

Gameplay: There are 7 worlds to complete, with 6 hub levels. with 13 levels each. 10 levels for the main game, and 3 bonus levels after the story mode. After world X-5, you will be treated to a mini boss, and after world X-10, you get to participate in the world's final boss, of which you will be rewarded with a Dragon Stone. World 7 doesn't have a Dragon Stone, or a chief, due to it being the final world. The game plays in a 3D style, rather than the traditional 2D or pseudo-3D. Additionally, the player has the option to play as Yoshi Jr. Birdetta, or both, of which the level designs will change to match their skills.
Another feature for when you choose to play as both of them, you will be able to use team techniques.

Those are the more important details. I can tell you more if you want to, but I can't right now, so, once again, send me some feedback.

Hey, never thought of that! I wanted to see Yoshi fight someone who wasn't Bowser too. Just wish you could have left Baby Mario out of it. Yoshi needs another game without sharing the spotlight with Mario, baby or adult.

mattdog1000000 In reply to koopaul [2011-12-19 05:09:21 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I kind of agree. But since I made those new dinosaurs, I thought the idea of passing along the baby to signify who was in control would be a neat idea. Also an idea that could work for multiplayer co-op, where each Yoshi on screen could do their own thing and pass the baby from one to the other, and whoever has the baby would play as the leader. The leader would be the one the other players would need to keep alive and reach the end.

Yeah, the baby is just there as a mechanic, really... True though, the fact that it's Mario does take some of the spotlight away from Yoshi. But at least he's a baby, which gives Yoshi complete control over him.

koopaul In reply to mattdog1000000 [2011-12-19 07:15:43 +0000 UTC]

Well my idea was instead of the gameplay revolving around protecting Baby Mario, it was Yoshi to have a stomach meter like in Sunshine. As time goes by Yoshi would get hungrier. He would have to eat fruit along the way or... die of starvation... Eh that's a little gruesome when I put it that way.

I kinda wanted to combine a little Yoshi's Story in there but not have eating fruit be your goal.

But back to your picture, do you suppose this could be the story of how Yoshi and Birdo got together? In the end Birdo realizes he/she likes Yoshi and becomes a good guy?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mattdog1000000 In reply to koopaul [2011-12-19 07:47:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I suppose it could lead to that, where Birdo becomes a good guy at the end.

I like the protecting the baby idea more for multiplayer, where they could design interesting puzzles around it. And other things, like where maybe before a Yoshi falls in a pit of lava, he could toss the baby up for another player to grab it, just to keep the game alive. But once that baby is gone, the level starts over... It just sounds like it could be a very strong cooperative element for gameplay. And when going back to single player, the ability to toss the baby will remain, and there will be places where you can use it, like the dinosaur buddies.

As for story... I kind of want to expand the setting to Dinosaur Land (especially now with these new dinosaur friends), but like Yoshi's Island, set in the past. I always found it strange that the rest of Dinosaur Land was absent around Yoshi's Island in YI, perhaps this could explain some things. As to why Baby Mario is back with Yoshi? Dang, I don't know... But they've done it before with games like Yoshi touch and go and Yoshi's Island DS, so it could happen again. Although putting together a story like that is much more complicated than simply saving a princess.

I was in a really Yoshi's Island mood since the Ambassador drops, so this was nice to see! I do agree though, instead of having Baby Bowser and the Koopa Troops be the main villains like in EVERY Mario game, give the Yoshi series their own bad guy! And Wart (especially with that long tounge) could be a perfect rival to Yoshi.

I also like your dinosaur companions, they really match Yoshi's style.

Nice.
I'd like SMB2's foes (and everything else from that game) to show up again (in a Mario game, though this is nice), too... only most of the enemies have returned.
I'd also like Peach and Toad to be playable in a main Mario game again. The dynamic between the four heroes worked nicely, and it was great seeing them in the action for once (Though, they have stepped-up their game lately...).

Yeah, it doesn't seem like they're going to replace Bowser any time soon. I think giving Yoshi the Shy Guys back in the day kept the characters alive. If they hadn't become Yoshi characters, they'd probably have been left forgotten (like how Wart is now). The Mario series already has its basic enemies, and its own villain, so there isn't really a need for characters like Wart, Birdo, or the shy guys to reappear (in the main series, anything goes in spin-offs). But for the Yoshi series (which branches off of Mario anyways), these guys could become the main villains. It could give them new life, and at the same time give the Yoshi series a greater identity.
