Haha "bros" I love it. Β This i love, despite me not being a big fan of raoul, i can still love this and his childhood innocence. And I dont mean i hate raoul, i just do not like what the musical (more so the 2004 movie did to him) gwaahh that hair style *shiver*. But i didnt mind him so much in the book. The relationship between he and his brother are adorable in this and i love it!

That wig in the '04 movie was quite atrocious...
The musical definitely does not do him enough justice, but some actors in the musical portray him quite well, such as: Jim Weitzer, Killian Donnelly, Steve Barton, Sean MacLaughlin, Shawn Michael Lewis...I could go on forever!

The 'One'* Rule about Phantom, that the phantom has to be the ugly one and Raoul the Pretty face.Β
the 2004 movie totally disregarded that. The phantom is supposed to allure Christine by his soul and understanding for music along with his mystery and hypnotism. Erik is not supposed to have a rough voice, not know how to sing and have tan abs of iron when he should have jaundice from living in a sewer basement lake house under an opera. Erik can not be hotter than the guy who gets the girl! It's as if the movie wanted to ship Christine and Erik together! (Which i have no qualms over by any means) But Really. And Also Raoul's acting in the ')4 movie could not hold a candle to the other actors who have played him and the original character himself. Patrick Willson's portrayal made Raoul far more soft spoken and meek compared to others and made me fear that he had something going on with Piangi being Christine's back. Raoul needs a bit of back bone, and not walking into the Opera's cellars looking so disheveled and his arm bleeding for no reason! We all knew he tookj off those clothes himself and probably cut his arm for show so Christine would be all like "Wow Raoul you did work hard! *swoon* i am just going to leave mr I have poison ivy but glowing abs for mr girly face long hair ". And I remember when I read the original book Leroux did describe Raoul as having a more feminine like face and often cried into Phillippe's arms over Christine but still, I didn't mind him in the book as much as the '04 movie pushed my buttons. And sorry for the rant... I like talking Phantom to those who would understand...

I saw Kyle on broadway too. And I'm seeing him again in it next week. I think he is quite adorable as Raoul. His portrayal is growing on me.
And yes. The '04 movie pretty much completely disregarded the entire point of the story pretty much.Β
One thing I love about Jim Weitzer's and Killian Donnelly's portrayals is that they portray Raoul with a backbone, yet they also add the sensitive and loving touches too. Killian's final lair is outstanding! He pretty much screams at the Phantom through the portcullis to let Christine go. So much emotion in his Raoul, which I love. And Steve Barton, ugh STEVE BARTON! Steve Barton's Raoul is just...no one can compete with Steve. Perfectly balanced backbone and sensitivity. He has it all!
I loved book Raoul. Even though he was a bit whiny...he just really loved Christine with all of his heart. he would do anything for her. He prepared to give up his whole entire life for her. Even though Philippe, who Raoul was so very close with, did not approve, he still was willing to give everything up to be with Christine. He was just so loyal.
And it's perfectly fine! I love getting into heated discussions over Phantom!

I also adore Erik with all my heart and I also pretty much will love Raoul to the ends of the earth...so you can pretty much have the best of both worlds! There's nothing that says you can only love one male lead in Phantom. So I choose both
