Description I think the saxphone can be more 3D... but I don't want to touch it anymore, at least for now....

Thanks to the people who encouraged me to keep going, that really helped to speed it up.

The whole image is made in Illustrator, vector.

It's my most complicated vector art yet... I think this open up a new door for me to another media.

This is for Free for all Contest.

Wow! I think you did a really great job!

Hmm I think I like the sax the way it is though.. If you made it more 3d looking, you might have to make the rest of the picture more 3d looking to match it ><

I just noticed the eyes are pretty detailed o_o!

Spectacular. I love the non-saturated colors and the lack of black lines so the colors are all layered. The scene really fits in with the Jazz mood and the fact that you have a majority of colors working to contrast each other. This is also fantastic for vector art. I love how you have the lighting working here to create that smoky/bright light feel to a jazz club. The berets and scarf are nice touch - I like how you used the complementary colors for them. The detail in the instruments is awesome!

Probably my one critique is that the sax seems a little big for Sonic, this is probably because he's kind of leaning back, which makes it seem like it should be further away or up in the air. If he had been leaning forward instead, I don't think I would have that feeling. Of course taking the style into consideration, one could argue that the sax is the center of the piece and is exaggerated since it's the instrument driving the music.

At any rate, I love this, and I can tell all the hard work you've put into it! Good skills in the contest. (Cause you don't need luck. )

mayshing In reply to ClimbingGecko [2004-11-22 18:54:40 +0000 UTC]

thanks for the nice crit. Yes, the sax is drawn bigger for a purpose. The sax is usually made for human size players, and sonic, well.... he is half of most ppl's height, according to my understanding. XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ClimbingGecko In reply to mayshing [2004-11-23 03:29:28 +0000 UTC]

Oh! I see! That makes a lot of sense. So it's like he's playing a human instrument then? XD that's cool! And that's why Knux is a little small then too?

How does Knux reach the bass pedal? Does he have a little lever or something? XD maybe Tails is hiding down there to push it XD (just kidding XD)

anyways, this is so neat

True, this is something that I do not see from you that OFTEN, ^_^ I see the detailed work on the saxophone, unfortunately, though I do not posses any knowledge nor talent at music (in all its extension), when I look at this picture, It is like I am hearing a "tune" from the picture, the work on the lights it is kinda relaxing, very proper to the theme of this picture, you can touch the sense of freedom on it, maybe you didnt meant to be relaxing, but It happened in some way, I have realized that you have a certain liking to those...how do you call it?...those "hats" XDD gosh, how ignorant of me! XDD...try this style with vector more often May-san ^_^...I can imagine what you`ll create using a new media for you

*never used vectors or Illustrator* That looks good. I really like the colors you chose, and the swirly mist stuff, and my gosh, that sax looks amazing! Knuckles looks cute in a beret, too. I wonder though; it looks like Sonic isn't really playing the instrument. Saxophone players usually have the reed more "in" their mouth. Eh, it's a nitpick on my part. Good job, and good luck in the contest!

Whoooo... that's one of the best vector arts I've seen in quite a long time.
You picked a rather interesting topic to base your entry on. ^___^
I think it's pretty nifty of you to choose a jazz band. Nowadays, lots of ppl like to place them in rock bands, or something like that.

I've tried Illustrator before, and I'm still not used to it.
DAMN, that sax must have taken you forever. I think it'd kill my hand for life if I tried it. X_____x

And you call this your first vector.... raaaaaahhhh... I hate j00 ;____; (I'm jk)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mayshing In reply to shadow-freak [2004-11-15 00:04:31 +0000 UTC]

actually... when i first had the idea in mind, I thought it was strange too, because Sonic's theme and song are usually in the Rock style.
But thinking into Nights into Dreams, Sonic R, there are soft rocks that are similar to the Jazz classic backgrounds, in which i find similarity to... O_o
So, I think its really not too far fatch, plus I used the more classical Sonic approach, making it more harmonized.

Illustrator... I made a couple of class projects with it before, so this isn't REALLY my first illustrator piece, but it is indeed, my FIRST illustrator illustration. I have never made one like this before.
That sax alone took as long as Sonic plus Knuckles.... =_=b yes, it took pretty long, I first printed out the reference, then sketch it to understand the structure, then I made the whole illustration in pencil, then trace over with colors and shapes in illustrator, still took a long time... the whole project is 12-16 hours.

Bleh, I'm going to comment again because it's the finalized version I think. xD;

Wow! This came out better than yesterday! Now that you've added the finishing touches and all, it's looks a lot more cooler!
Man! I still like the background. It's almost as if Sonic and Knuckles are either, performing in front of a crowd in a club, or they're just jamming outside in public! I mean, the background could make you think that way. You just wonder sometimes! O.o
Oh! I also like how the cymbals and the silver standings came out! they maybe be the littlests things in the picture, but it pleases me just a little more than most of the other things. ^_^ Not to mention the saxophone.

Awesome jobness Mayshing! As you said already, you may have opened the door to a new media; and I'm sure there will be plenty more coming in the future! ^_~

Sonic in a jazz band! Very unique idea! Vector style fan art is particularly rare to find among Sonic fanart pieces.

This is... well... really amazing O___O;;

I've never tried working with Illistrator, so I don't know how difficult it is to make vector images. How many layers (if there are layers, ehe) does something like this take? O.O

Fantastic lighting effects from the background, and it even seems to be alive with music. In particular, the metal parts of the image look really real. Good job with the "jazzy" artistic attire on Sonic and Knuckles. I wonder what tune they're playing in this city =] *chuckle*

Awesome as ever. Your variation in technique and all-around skills and knowledge with different types of art is really inspiring, and well as your originality.

eeeks.... I don't even want to dig in to count how many layers and shapes I actually have.... well, just think of this... EVERY little shape on this image is a layer of vector, and every shadowing is created by another vector layer.... you can imagine now.

Vector is alot harder to learn than photoshop and bitmap art making, I have to admit that~~ I still have trouble with it as the matter of fact. ^^b

Thank u for the complitment, I am flattered...
