“I myself have recently drawn poppies, so I'm kind of in the topic. I know that they're not an easy thing to put onto paper (or any other medium), because they're so floppy and delicate... It is hard to make them look like a material thing and as thin as their petals are the same time.
I am therefore happy that the artist here managed to do it! They might not look too slender, but it might also be me - I rarely use paint due to it looking too solid for me. I must although admit, that they look very real in terms of being all foldy.
The colors are nicely chosen, too. If it was digital, I'd say they inkdropped from a picture! Excellent way of putting some orange and white into poppies, which are thought to be only red.
The flowers also stand out very well from the background, making a good eye-catching centre of interest in the painting. I am impressed by the overall effect of this piece, especially 'cause it was made in only one hour and a half!
The only thing I might complain about are the white spots all around, but that's almost unnoticeable, and doesn't disrupt the general reception of this piece.”

“I love the contrast between the red flowers and the green background – they stand out very well. The only thing that bothers me are the white dots all over the picture, especially around the border of the flowers. Apart from that, it's a very beautiful and realistic painting!”

“I like the classic red/green contrast, it works well most times and does so here as well. The depth of the background is well done with the different hues of green and the light buds standing out are a nice touch. I feel though that you might have darkened it more to really emphasize the flowers, bright red on very dark green. The petals are painted beautifully. I would maybe have painted the highlights not in white but a light yellow shade and had some darker parts, but that is personal preference I guess. What is bothering me is the white spaces - even if they're small, they are distracting, try to really get paint onto every tiny bit of paper. But apart from that I really like it, the detail especially on the flowers is amazing and you really get a feeling for the texture of the petals. Nice work!”

“The first thing that struck me about this piece was the texture in the background – I love how the paper’s texture shows through and I love the layering from Dark to Light green on it. I suppose that the white marks showing through aren’t really something to be desired but ah well. Maybe perhaps some more dark defined lines to bring out each petal but other than that, these are pretty damn good as they are! The seeds are wonderfully detailed and I quite like the composition of this piece.”

“I love the color balance in this, it's so contrasting, yet very clear and natural. The flowers themselves are very gorgeous and we have some great depth, especially in areas with a strong cast shadow. The weight of them is beautiful, then, but with a force to them. You also do a nice job with the velvety reflections on the petals, the slightly cooler hue creates a soft effect. I think the mid tones could be a bit more smooth though, ideally a transparent application would be used to give them an overall structure. However, since this was a quick piece, I think the amount of detail you put into each is appropriate.
The green stalks are nice, especially when you contrast them directly against the reds. As for the deeper background to this piece, I like the dark swatch in the corner, but the haphazard green strokes elsewhere in the image are distracting. They create the impression of foliage, which is good, but I think you might have a more intriguing composition if you treated them as am overall gradient, dividing along the diagonal of the painting.
Technically for those white spots, maybe some Gesso before hand to improve the surface. Also taking a clean brush for blending, or laying down a thin initial layer would be helpful. Have you played around with any acrylic media? Something to get a nice viscous quality to the paint.
Anyway, beautiful image, with some great color interactions.”

“One thing about poppies that always intrigued me is that, in spite the fact that their design is relatively simple, getting the right look for them can be very difficult, especially with less fluid media, such as acrylics. Yet you've nailed it wonderfully, especially with the help of the use of white, giving the petals a smooth, glossy look. I also like the rough brush strokes at the bottom that suggest grass and underbrush. “
