This is so gorgeous! I love bird paintings--mine never look as good as this though! I really like those flowers too. They look like they're made of white chocolate!

Very nice, but the lettering right across the middle of it all kind of spoils the whole thing. I thought unwanted stuff in the scene is only inherent to photography (i.e. you can't magically make the lettering disappear while trying to take a photograph through someone's stenciled office window, etc., ha), but I would have thought that THAT would have been easily avoidable when painting or sketching ... I mean, just leave the unwanted stuff out. Right? ??? Too bad, other than that, it would have made a really super nice windows wallpaper.

gawrsh, some folks are hard to please. Don't you realize that lettering adds immensely to the composition? Sheesh. Took me hours to get it just right, too.

joking. I'm editing the image so the copywrong is lower down, but I have to warn you this pic doesn't make a good background, at least not on my machine. I tried it out of curiosity after reading this--it gets squashy. I guess it's not a good ratio...and honestly it's a bit busy for a wallpaper, isn't it? Your proggies will get lost in the fray

Honestly, that is some really excellent work. It is such a peaceful soothing soft piece to look at ... not busy at all. If you want to see what I mean by busy myself, look at that Ugly Forest picture that I tried to take and just sent to my scraps section - now that is what I would call busy (warning, looking my hurt your eyes - ha).

I had a look--Busy, yep, but it's interesting too. Kind of hypnotic How did you get that effect? I'm guessing increased saturation?

Divinorumus In reply to MBoulad [2006-05-05 07:45:52 +0000 UTC]

False white balance setting, exposure comp set low, saturation set high. I struggle with this thing called creativity .. but you, your work, how do you do that? I see such things in my head, but my mind refuses to allow my hands to transcribe it - ha. You are definitely gifted, you don't seem to need a camera like me. Do you have any of your work on public display anywhere?

Just realized. I did it again...wrote 'copywrite' on this work :lamo: I wonder why I keep doing that? I guess I should take GoldenSalamanders advice and just make 'copywrite' my tm.

I am clueless about photography, I should read up on some of these terms--'false while balance' doesn't ring a bell. I like that photo It's hard to look away, I kept trying to work out what's in the foreground and what's in the background. I kept wanting to duck down and get a view under the branches lol

No work on display, other than here. In a way, that's good, there's no pressure on me and I'm free to create as I please and when I'm able. I like working like this, especially with digital media; it's versatile and allows freedom for things to evolve as the work progresses. It's an especially good way to experiment with new ideas.

I think your work IS creative, you have an interesting perspective that shows in your work. Your recent submissions of tulips, for instance, have an unusual view and good sense of colour.

I wish I could spell. Copywrite. *snickers* Oy...

You really should put some of your work out there in a noticeable public location. For example, when visiting the arboretum and the two zoos here, or even other public places like the library and airport, I've found MANY beautiful paintings and photographs hanging on the walls which were created and donated (or one temporary display) by various individuals. Of course someone somewhere must preview and approve all of these before being displayed because I have yet to find anything grossly amateurish hanging on the walls (ha, you know how we all can sometimes think something we did looks really good when in fact everyone else isn't impressed what-so-ever - ha), but I noticed many people do stop and appreciate those pieces of art (including myself), and I've noticed that down in the corner of many pieces on display now, in addition to the creators signature, there is a URL to their web site/store, and I've seen people write that stuff down, presumably for later follow-up once home.

BTW, white balance is (for the most part) the digital equivalent of placing a tinted filter between your film and the scene being projected upon in an attempt to correct for various tined lighting sources. Color correction can be done on the camera at the time the picture is taken, or later during printing when the image is projected onto paper. Although there are advantages of filtering out a certain spectrum of light waves before it is allowed to hit the digital sensor, most people don't have a big box full of all the various expensive filters one would need to do this correctly (and quality filter cost $$$). On a digital camera however, one can instantly establish what is suppose to be white in order to remove unwanted hue, or they can totally confuse the camera and create some unusual surreal effects, especially if you also use at least two different colored light sources in your scene. "Oranges are white, really they are, trust me!" If you get into photography and start playing around with the white balance, don't become discouraged - ha, 9 times out of 10 the results are awful, but every once in a white you'll hit upon a scene with just the right colors with just the right lighting and you'll just accidentally hit upon a unique setting which will surprise you. Of course I can imagine all digital cameras do this differently and some may not be as flexible (or more flexible), but that's part of the fun and challenge: figuring it out, learning, improving, teaching, sharing ... and above all else: enjoying!

Anyhow ... you have REAL talent (in fact I see a lot of that here on DA). Not many people out in the real world are able to create in their mind what you see and in the way you see it, let alone are able to get their hands to cooperate in expressing what it is they are imagining in such an impressive and effect and tender way as you do! You should have no problem getting some local public exposure with your talent ...

Aw, darn...I answered and it got lost Sorry about that. I think sometimes I accidently hit cancel instead of send lol

I'm feeling a bit leery of pursuing any attention for my work, especially real world type attention (DA doesn't count heh!). Sometimes it seems the little bit I've had here on DA and another forum is all I can handle At least at the moment. Ever worry that too much attention will make it harder to stay on course with your work? Feels like that to me, especially the real life stuff. Maybe I should work under a psuedonym, hmmm...then I wouldn't have to feel shy or stressed

So would you consider getting your work displayed in one of the locales you've mentioned? That might be less stressful than a formal exhibition. You have so many beautiful things to choose from, and probably more we haven't seen on DA

Thank you for explaining white balance (!) going to try that out with my camera...I looked it up in my user guide, sure enough sounds easy. I've not given that user guide enough of a work out. Honestly, it would make things so much easier to understand what all those buttons do lol.

Hey, I like climbing trees too Or at least I did when I was young enough to get away with it, I think they'd cart me off to a padded room somewhere if I was caught in one nowdays. to you, a fellow tree climber

What do you not like about the composition? What could you have done differently to make it better?..............I can feel the teacher in me stirring to life.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MBoulad In reply to ArtbySandiJohnson [2006-04-03 06:44:16 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm...about the composition, it's too busy. I think I got a bit lost in painting these flowers and forgot to step back and view the entire painting as I went. I have a bad habit of starting a painting from a focal point and working my way outward from there. I need to plan ahead further before beginning my projects, I think

It must be nice having that teaching experience under your belt. You've probably trained yourself to stand back and view a work objectively, something I find hard to do while working. It shows in your work, too It seems more complete and balanced than mine.

SO...I guess that means I know what to do: plan things out, and reign in my over-enthusiasm when starting something new, heh heh. Easier said than done!

ArtbySandiJohnson In reply to MBoulad [2006-04-03 15:25:47 +0000 UTC]

Hehe. Believe it or not I have trouble not taking enough time planning my paintings and drawings out, too, and looking for problems. I used to like to start painting before I knew exactly what I was going to do with it. I got over that, but I still find myself rushing the process and being sorry about it later a lot of the time when I do. For instance the Moonlight Sonata and Moonlight Sonata in Blue. I rushed the graphite and her face was askew. When I started the color I improved her face a little (didn't want to change it so much it didn't look like the same elve.) but didn't think out the color well enough and had trouble with her hair. It is something I have to work against. As far as the teaching, it does help to get a starting point and pick out some of the more obvious things, but I need to know so much more about art to be better at it. Hop you had a good weekend and a rest. Glad you're going to get a break in a few days.

It looks so beautifull =^_^=
I love pigeons. I even have a photo of me with a pigeon on my head (not uploaded, as I'm not the owner of the pic)
My friend *Muffi and I was feeding them
Our norwegian kind looks very much like this one, exept for the cool fether stiking out on it's head
Hm, the wing looks a bit flat and "pasted on top" kinda....

MBoulad In reply to Abstormal [2006-03-23 12:15:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks SD....you're brave to let a pigeon sit on your head, I'd be awfully nervous about getting a present I didn't want lol I like feeding them too (the wild domestic pigeons, I mean, these guys are too nervous to eat from people as far as I can tell)

I guess I could go back and shade the wing a bit more...the feathers are a bit iridescent, so it wouldn't hurt to add more depth at some point. I'm so tired right now I don't even want to think about starting, tho!

Thank you! I thought I answered this, and I guess it didn't go through, I'm sorry

The flowers are frangipani, they're really pretty. I guess you could say I took a bit of artistic license with them I think I painted them a bit bigger than they really are...but yes, there are flowers like this.

These pigeons are really sweet, and very shy compared to the kind you feed at the park. I really do like them...

Thanks for the comment, I enjoyed this...these pigeons were one of the first that caught my eye when I first came to Australia from the US. I was so thrilled with them when I saw them at the train station at Sydney, and was shocked that people were walking by them like they weren't even there. They looked so exotic and strange to my Yankee eyes, I couldn't imagine why no one else was marvelling over them
