2021 Betty and Nephertyl
Chola Characters based on "To laugh again " by Jayashree Gopal
Muziris India 990 AD
Marseilles November 16 1952
Nephertyl entered the well-lit warehouse, looking around, hoping to catch Betty unawares.
She was interested in seeing what their Indian suppliers had sent them. It had been about 6 years since the last shipment from that area and she was hoping to see if the promised Chola empire pieces were of the same quality as the ones in her personal museum.
A cry of joy from Betty made her change directions towards the unpacking and sorting tables on the waterside of the warehouse. With a smile on her face, she knew that something special had caught Betty’s eye.
Nephertyl shook her head ruefully still surprised at how Betty had learned to enjoy art from around the world; a propensity that, she readily admitted, had never been anything she had cared for before they had met.
Walking past the end of the storage racks, she saw Betty standing in front of a magnificent four-foot tall bronze with a rare elliptical shaped flame surround of Shiva “As Lord of the Dance”.
She gasped when she realized that it was a piece she had seen nearly a millenium before in one of the markets in Muziris.
The same trip where she had met the family that still works with her as her business partner in India and South East Asia.
The same trip where she met the handsome prince Rajendra.
A trade mission planned for a single season in 895; turning into a fifteen year love affair with India and it’s Chola prince, until he left on the campaigns to conquer Rashtrakutas and the Western Chalukyas in 1002 AD.
An amazing time in her life; where Nepherti became great friends with the sword-woman Devi and her husband, the prince’s great friend, General Kumaravela .
It was a bittersweet time, as she always knew that it could not last, especially as she was already 160 years young in what was her eighth life.
However, it was fun, Rajendra was a handsome young man and a poet, for all that he was a warrior, as well. It wasn’t until years later that she learned from her friend Tribhuvana, who wound up being one of his queens, that he had expanded the empire non-stop until his death.
