Description This is a redesign of Avacyn media.wizards.com/images/magic…

I tried a different technique with this one.  I feel like the result is that the values aren't as harsh.  I sorta like it.

I think the reason I keep on redesigning MTG card art (other than liking the game) is that it's a good way to gauge my improvement.  I really want to get published one day.  It still feels like a long way to go @_@....

Looks fantastic mate. I have no idea who the character is, sorry, but the pose is strong and powerful, contrasted against he flow of fabric behind her, and the faint halo around her head is a clever touch.

Also, love the colour pallet particularly, oddly, through the clouds in the background.

It's just a character from a card game, I didn't like her design so I redid it, that's pretty much it.  Nothing special.  I'm working on an ARIA piece right now so you'll definitely recognize the characters in that one!  I haven't drawn any ARIA in a whole year.  I always feel like I can never do it justice.

The cloth was actually a happy accident.  I got a really good "shape" the first brush through and kept it.  I didn't count on it being so nice and so much better than my original sketch.  Clouds are actually kind of hard.  I've decided to stop using so many dumb texture brushes so I went back to using a round brush to do the clouds.  I like the texture (like a paintbrush) more vs just dragging a cloud brush around. The texture gives it a more human touch.

Well, you'll have all new ARIA to draw come September Honestly, I've not touched ARIA in ages either... really should do something about that, at least before this next series ends.

And yes, it is horribly difficult to try and do justice to...

Happy accidents are the best kind, and yes, clouds can be a serious pain. I find they either seem to work first go, or just become endless tweaking and throwing colour at the page until it looks sort of like what you want. As to brushes, I only really use two these days: the hard round for detailing, and the... I think they're the "chalk" ones? Either way, they're squared off and a bit spotty, but I like the texture and sense of a more physical brush stroke they seem to give (at least, I think so). As you said, I think doing it yourself adds a more human touch. Automating the process just, I dunno, it just seems to leave something lacking.

I feel a bit disappointed by the new ARIA.  I think I should be happy about getting any ARIA at all since the series ended so any new material is super good...However I can't help to feel disappointed.

I may be wrong but if what I read is reliable. I think the new ARIA series is actually 3 OVA episodes to be released along with the Blu-Ray for the Animation / Natural / Origination box sets as bonus material, which will be doled out periodically starting September till the end of June.

To be honest, I've not really been keeping that abreast of it since the two new characters were shown. That said, I actually wouldn't mind if it was just a short OVA, part of me has been very iffy about the whole thing since it was announced. Don't get me wrong, I am of course happy to get new ARIA but, by the same token, it's now headed into uncharted, non-manga, territory, and part of me is a little dubious if they will be able to maintain the same feel and tone.

Not to mention the previews have shown Athena being present who, well... kind of no-longer has a voice. Yes, they could feasibly use another voice actor but, well, for a character to centred around her voice... not sure.

Still, hoping for the best.

If I remember, I think there was some studio original material in the anime(can't quite remember).  If that's true then I don't think they're actually that bad, they were pretty good.

Since it's new characters etc.  I probably wouldn't mind too much if the feel shifted or changed.  It would make more sense if there was change.  I will probably enjoy the new ARIA regardless, even if it's only 3 eps.  So part of me still feels a bit upset that we're being teased and the episodes are just being made to push blu ray sales.

I could just be bias seeing as I sorta know you, but this looks waaaay better. There's definitely more life to the character and looks more fitting for the title and presence.

One thing I will say they did better is the surrounding feels like it compliements the character better. For something like this, those golden rays of sunshine coming down helped bring character to the picture, supplimented the grand and holy form that has taken place.

Thanks!  I put more time trying to improve on the design of the original because I really didn't like that goth/marvel look.  I agree with the comment about the background.  I think it's actually a bad habit I picked up from when I drew anime.  Usually the point of anime is the character so I got really used to drawing and rendering the character first and leaving the background as an afterthought.  It's an awful habit.  Looking at some of my more recent junk I think I underestimated how badly it impacted the end result.

Yeah, usually when the focus is on the mood(the reaction from the viewer), I feel like you need to focus on the background more. Focus on the character should be saved for a focus on action. Which, I do admit, when there's action in MtG pieces...those tend to focus too much on the background and end up missing the focus.

But yeah, the character should be part of the background. Should still stick out, but the background should still be complimentary to it, be part of it based off the character.

Like for some extreme examples... gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Car… despite all the attention to detail on it's surroundings, this puts the action of the Sphinx's flight front and center...yet... gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Car… this card, despite it only being of only two people clearly battling, my focus goes to the surroundings, especially due to the poor presentation of character in front. If I focus on any, it's the one in the back, and when he's more of the background than in the front, it just makes the presentation worse. The artist on the Sphinx though keeps the surroundings in the foreground and leaves the Sphinx with a glowing presences, making it pop out. It's also facing toward the viewer, which is key. Should be facing or looking toward the side, anything to see the front in some way. If the artist was smart for Buldgeon Brawl, they should of made the guy leaping in the background be the focus and the guy being jumped at in the foreground.

holy shit I completely forgot to reply to this.

Thanks for writing all that, I am slow and crappy at replying >.>...you're definitely right about bringing certain things forward / out in an image.  Its something I think I forgot about doing a lot when I immersed myself into trying to get technique etc down and for the most part let composition fall by the way side.  They're both important and I really need to whip myself to not let one slide in favor of another.
