Description To mark both my comeback in DA and a new entry for the Doomsday-verse AU, here's a new map-file! This one focuses on Canada (what's left of Canada anyway) from 1983: Doomsday ( althistory.wikia.com/wiki/Cana... , althistory.wikia.com/wiki/Hist... ) circa 2012-13.

Due to the inconsistencies with the maps and some of the details in the source material, I took some liberties with how the Canadians are portrayed here compared to 1983: Doomsday. Still, I tried to keep it as consistent and in-spirit as possible. Also, there are a few nods some other details from the sources, like the American and Canadian Survivor-Nations as well as the UK remnants in New Britain ( www.deviantart.com/users/outgo... )

At any rate, hope you enjoy!

Canada, known by others as the Canadian Remainder Provinces holds sway over the American wastelands as a major power. From its origins among native tribes and Anglo-French colonists, it also holds the strongest claim to being the oldest remaining “Old World” country on the continent. Along with the Celtic Alliance and Nordic Union, it is a founding member of the Atlantic Defense Community and a strong player in the international stage as North America’s premier representative to the League of Nations. The capital is in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Though the Canadians were no strangers to hardship in the past, the events of 26 September 1983 threatened to put an end their country. Their ties to Britain, the Americans and NATO meant that Canada was a major target for the Soviets. Many areas either slid into chaos or in the case of Ottawa, Vancouver, Montreal and many other cities, burned in nuclear fire. Yet this was by no means the end. Amidst the turmoil, some of the eastern Provinces held firm; the larger representation of Francophones, First Nation peoples and even American refugees owes much to this. It wasn’t long before local authorities met up with both the military and what remained of the old government, leading to the move into St. John’s in early 1984.

At first, the country was content with simply surviving and restoring order in the remaining Provinces. But as life returned to some sense of normalcy, contact was once again made with the outside world. By the early 1990s, a naval fleet was even dispatched for a global expedition, contacting many other nations old and new. Closer to home however, it also became evident that much of Canadian soil was comprised of various communities, warlord realms (such as Thunder Bay before its “reclamation” in 2010) and full-fledged Survivor-Nations (Victoria and Assinboia further west). The next several years would see the government expand into and reintegrate the surrounding communities. Some regions like Nova Scotia and Eastern Ontario were brought back into the fold peacefully, though areas like parts of Quebec remain lawless frontiers while the short if shady war with Saguenay separatists in 2009-10 led to the Survivor-Nation’s guaranteed recognition.

Today, even with such setbacks and the lingering legacy of Doomsday, Canada remains a bastion of civilization, liberty and democracy for the North American wastes. The authorities in St. John’s have long dropped claims to all pre-1983 territory in an act of respect and friendship to the Survivor-Nations Canadians now share their land with; it’s no surprise that more of them, including those in the former US increasingly see the country as an “elder sibling-figure” of sorts if not America’s “most legitimate” successor despite sensitive issues regarding the American memory of Doomsday. Another curiosity is the fact that the nation still retains the monarchy, though some are not quite supportive of having the King of New Britain as sovereign.

Meanwhile, more peculiar developments have emerged. Since 2009, there's been contact with a parallel “Provisional Canada” that had emerged from communities in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Much talk as been made of it merging with the legitimate Canadian government, possibly opening the room for other Survivor-Nations like Victoria or the Northwest Alliance to rejoin. While among the former Americans, growing restlessness has given the Survivor-Nation of Superior as well as the self-proclaimed "New United States" greater influence. Time, however, will tell…

As a disclaimer, I don't own 1983: Doomsday, which belongs to its respective owners. Neither is this meant to be a deliberate political/ideological/propaganda screed of any kind.

Great map. But the title in French is not correct, it should be "Provinces du reste du Canada", or "Provinces restantes du Canada" (I prefer the latter).

Is Saguenay a First Nation or Québécois nation ?

It's Quebecois. The folks there took advantage of the initial Doomsday chaos to declare independence.

As for Canada, his survival and prosperity comes across as pretty bittersweet.

I noticed the great irony of Alfred been dead while Ivan is still alive if slowly fading with time much like Roderich is. Irony in that if you want to be very simple and black and white about the Dooms Day it was the Soviets that fired the nukes first and America retaliated, although its obvious that the while thing was a gigantic mistake and tragedy for both sides and they were ultimately both wrong and rightfully bare the blame.

What makes it all the more depressing for America is that he knows there's a very strong possibility of Canada and England dying from his actions, along with a good chunk of the planet. Yet by that point, he had little choice.

It does a good job of hitting home on the point of how stupid and destructive nukes are along with the whole concept of M.A.D even if ultimately in RL it did prevent WWIII.

You could say that Doomsday showed just how limited and fragile M.A.D. was in preventing WWIII in-verse. Tellingly, many still blame the US and/or the Soviet Union for "almost ending the world." The Japanese for instance utterly hate America for his perceived betrayal.

I can't say I blame them due to the situation. Heck I'm still disgusted that atomics were ever used at all even though they did save more lives in the long run and force Japan to surrender the resulting arms race and nuclear balance of power and fear that is M.A.D make it almost unjustifable .

If I recall Ivan killed the Soviet Permier after what happened correct ?

Oh yes. It's a nod to the 1983: Doomsday source material where the Soviet Premier died of a heart attack upon realizing what was about to happen. In the Doomsday-verse...well, the heart attack excuse was used to cover up how Ivan killed him, which came across as a heart attack.
