Welp, I found out on the last day of March that the second day of April is Autism Awareness Day...Sort of a funny thing to not know before hand since I have Asperger's (though, the DSM is combining it all into the category of "autism", so I've been just calling it "autism" lately).
But, there were folks talking about it in the community I'm part of, so I decided to do something for it.
The poem, I made myself. The characters in the picture are my best friends and I as furries. My furry character is the blue wolf in the middle (also the one on my DevID).
One of my friends wanted to be a bat-fox, so that's what the flying furry is. The others resemble their animals to the point of not needing an explanation (I hope).
Don't remember how long it took to do it all...a few hours, at least, for the drawing.
The poem didn't take long to come up with.

I may have something different from Autism, but I feel with nearly the whole of that poem. Well done.
For those that may be curious as to what I have that isnβt Autism but still allows me to relate so much. The answer is Tourette Syndrome. I donβt mind answering questions about it but be aware that I donβt talk as much as I used to on this site so my responses may be rather slow.

I hope your family can understand one day!Β Feel free to link them to AuTalkz; I made it with the initial intent to help my parents understand, and at least my mom has given it a chance.Β Now it's just to help others as well (since I doubt my dad will ever really get it and my brother doesn't read them either) and so that people on the spectrum don't feel so alone.

My nephew has severe autism. He's 11 and was diagnosed when he was 3. Communication is not his strong point. To convey his feelings, he mostly quotes movies and TV shows and such. But I imagine this is how he feels.

Yep. I didn't find out until 3 years ago, either. It's April 2nd in particular, but the entire month of April is pretty much looked at as Autism Awareness Month.

I think Asperger's and Autism are some of the most misunderstood things. Mental retardation sometimes accompanies autism, so a lot of people automatically assume that if someone's autistic, they're also retarded...I've never had anyone assume that (as I always have to explain what Asperger's IS), but I get from my dad all the time that I should be able to do all the things some other aspie can do (like hold onto a job for more than 3 months).
So, I can at least understand how annoying it is to have a family member make assumptions because they either don't have the facts or don't want to look at the facts.

I go back and forth between what I call it...technically, it's a form of autism (just high-functioning), and there was some talk a year or two back about the DSM just throwing it all under the label of "autism". Plus, some people seem to understand better if I just say "autism" (others, like my parents, get angry, so I often swap back and forth).
...dunno what ever happened to that DSM thing, come to think of it...

Thanks! That means a lot to me to hear! It goes both ways, too! I'm not very good at expressing my feelings at times (and running from some of my problems), but I have this habit of mediating and trying to help people with their own problems.
