Description A French friend pointed this out to me when we watched the 25th Anniversary Concert and she heard that dude shout "On-jol-rass", 'cept she said it nicely and simply.
Being a person with an often mispronounced name, and with his seriousness, I imagine that he'd eventually snap with annoyance. Am I right in saying his name isn't mentioned in the libretto?

Really, I don't think Ramin's the type to swear but I loved him as Enjolras and he pulled this great angry face and I couldn't resist

EDIT: As a few people (including the Les Mis film) have pointed out, the "s" can be pronounced as well, so I think it's up to preference whether that last part is said as "-rah" or "-rahs".

I say it wrong, I pronounce it phonetically, which, as a french learner, I know is very naughty.

so that is how you pronounce it! i never actually knew how to pronounce it. i typed it in google translate and clicked the speaker button but the french lady doesn't help at all. i've been pronouncing it sort of right. i just got one part wrong. i called him "Ehn-zhol-rahs". it's not my fault it has an E in the beginning and they never actually say it in the musical.

Don't worry, I used to pronounce it like that as well! And if I hadn't looked up casts I wouldn't have known his name either. I would've just called him "Vest Guy".

I think I took to calling him E for a while until I could learn how to say his name ....

But then I started ohn-ja-rah(s) which seems to have stuck in my mind as how to pronounce his name.

I actually should make a note because "On-zhol-rass" seems to be the alternative pronunciation and it's how they say it in the movie. I think it's just by preference whether or not you want to say the "s"

This is too funny! I was imagining him singing this in the Phantom of the Opera tune, and that just made me die of laughter.
Now this is really weird because I speak French, so I have no problem pronouncing everyone's names. But for some reason Javert from the beginning was "Ya-verr" for me. I have to consciously correct myself before I say his name every single time. Hmm. now I"m imagining Javert staring down his nose at me. "C'est JJJa-vert!"

I'm French so I can say Enjolras easy. ^-^
For me, Ramin is incredible and perfect for Enjolras. I love watch 25th anniversary of Les Miserables just for him and for the beautiful song ! <3

Lol. I am not so tolerant with mispronunciation.

I'm not sure sure. One time my father, who is French pronounced En-zhol, rahss, so I guess either way works.

But hey, someone in the original French recording of Les Mis pronounced it like that, so I think it just depends on whether or not you want to pronounce the "s" at the end.

But here's one thing I don't get. I stumbled across the original French version of the musical...and I distinctly heard someone call him "Enjolras" WITH the "s" being pronouned (it's right here: [link] ). So now I'm confused...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MdeLucena In reply to KitakLaw [2011-09-18 20:09:13 +0000 UTC]

Wow, now so am I. I suppose the only thing I can say is that it varies from person to person? Hmm. And that he just needs a nice, simple name. Like "Erik." Everyone can pronounce "Erik" and it won't take away his awesome.

KitakLaw In reply to MdeLucena [2011-09-18 20:16:51 +0000 UTC]

I dunno - I suppose that we won't know the answer unless someone can go back in time and hear how Victor Hugo himself would have pronounced it.
