Description Heh, I am now now posting this with the right Jonas Brother. But yeah, I felt embarrassed for him during this LES MISERABLES 25TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT performance. He sounded pretty, in fact I remember being impressed by that, but the acting? Not so much. My friends and I sat watching it and just began laughing hysterically when he did the "I'm doing everything all wrong." lyric in "A Heart Full of Love."

Okay, but he's no stranger to musical theater not sure why everyone is acting like he has no experience. It's actually how he got his start before Disney Channel. I think he did okay, but as of now where his voice has gotten stronger and more mature, he would have done better.

One of these things is not like the others.
Which one is different? Do you know?
Can you tell which one is not like the others?
I'll tell you if it is so.

I actually think he did a fantastic job. He actually got his musical start in Les Mis when he played Gavroche when he was younger. And he is doing a lot of musical theater (which being a fan of musical theater myself, I find really cool of him for being different than the average pop star) In fact, Nick is going to replace Darren in How to Succeed in afew weeks.
I just feel like people give Nick more crap than he deserves. Les Mis is a tough musical to do and I think he did a great job. Far better than what most can do. Yes, he may not be the best but I think he brought a youthful feel to the character.
I feel like most people hate on him simply because he was in a Disney band. Can't we look past the pop star bit and focus on the person and his talent?

I thought he sounded ok, my big problem was that he seemed sooo scared that there was kind of a problem, poor little thing.

personally i think he WAS out of place, i saw the tenth aniversary and the 25th aniversery and i must say that while he did a comendable job with the singing the acting left a lot to be desired and he just couldn't hit the notes with the same passion as the marius of the tenth anniversary concert. i still aplaud him for his effort since it must have been far out of his comfort zone.

Just looked him up. His voice is pretty impressive. I still prefer the other Mariuses (Mariuss? Mariusi?) though.

I very much dislike the Jonas Bros. I do like one song (thanks to Meet the Robinsons) of theirs. If though my age group sees this because it has him in it, well then they are being introduced to something amazing and awesome.

I saw him in the show at the West End... Man, half of the audience was Nick Jonas fangirls and/or their parents. It made me sad to think that a lot of people were there for him and not to appreciate the wonderful musical classic that is Le Miz :/

Beautiful! Nick did okay, compared to the nuclear bombing I was prepared for, but still if I was him I would crawl into a small dark corner if I had to see Ramin, Alfie, and Colm Wilkonson (not to mention Michael Ball)! Awesome pic!

You ask "WTF?" ... and I couldn't disagree more. Nobody seems to admit that, for once, Marius actually looks like a bookish nineteen-year-old! Which is how he was written! His acting on the concert stage was not only admirably detailed, but also fit the role.

Look at Jonas next to whatever actor is playing Enjolras. It's a closer match of demeanor and physical type than I've seen in two performances by the national touring company, and it's closer than Michael Ball managed on the 10th anniversary. (I can't extrapolate from that to how Ball performed or looked ten years earlier, of course.)

Jonas is not an operatic(ish) singer. That's clear. But he put forward an intelligent, passionate rendition. Ball sang the stuffing out of "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables." Has no one stopped to consider that, perhaps, the song's setting, pace, and surrealism (remember the ghosts) actually don't require its being turned inside out by an operatic voice? That it can benefit from a more wistful, melancholic rendition?

Jonas managed this well, and I found it intriguing, not just in Marius's showcase song, but throughout this concert. Does his less powerful but more subtly expressive voice really "fit" in tone and force with the stronger ones around him? Perhaps not. Does his take, though, do justice to the character and plot? Most emphatically, from where I sit.

If "Les Mis" is going to be performed fifty years from now, as the producer hoped on stage, it will have to show fresh ideas. Including in the interpretations of these roles.

Alfie Boe as Valjean didn't warble as Colm Wilkinson did, either, but that didn't make him deficient. If we can accept variations in how the central character is portrayed, why not in the second lead male role? I don't see any reason for rejecting what Jonas did with this, and many for welcoming a new take on it.

He looked wonderful, it did dawn on me that yeah, this is probs what Marius should look like, and as I said, he sounded pretty good. However, next to the other actors, his acting was painful. He was so stiff too. I kept being like, "Honey, relax."

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Greybird007 In reply to Becca5002 [2011-04-02 18:19:47 +0000 UTC]

I still can't quite agree, I'm afraid. He wasn't "stiff" — apart from, okay, the contrast with those other powerful voices getting under his skin, and I wouldn't blame him for a little performance awe.

He was earnest, as Marius would be earnest, and especially about how his attraction and attention would be reciprocated in a moment of upheaval. He couldn't quite "relax." That's part of the point of his predicament, and that of his friends. (Except for Grantaire and his bottle.) Bsll got too familiar with the role, methinks.

... Sorry about my rattling on at such length, and I wasn't meaning to make it look as if I was dumping on you in particular. It's just that I've seen so many criticisms of Jonas, here and elsewhere, far more than he deserved, and this happened to be an outlet for framing a response.

"Embarrassed for him" is pretty much how I felt, too. He wasn't bad, it's just that everyone else was amazing, so they made him look bad by comparison. It's like taking some college football freshman and having him play in the Super Bowl - why would you do that!?

Amkii [2011-03-28 06:24:52 +0000 UTC]

I was severely underwhelmed with EVERYTHING about his performance... his "singing," his "acting"... hell, he's not even attractive to LOOK at in my opinion! The ONE OK thing about him is that at least he can carry a melody without going noticeably flat or sharp. He was on key. Bravo, kid... you can do ONE thing that all musicians are supposed to be able to do once they learn how music works.

o__o Oh. My. Gosh.
Totally true story-- When I found out about NJ being in Les Mis, I cried...and contemplated suicide.
Dramatic? Yes. But I found it impossible to believe musical theater could sink so low, especially for a musical as beautiful and profound as Les Mis.
Though, after Love Never Dies, I should have known, really. :/ Anything can go wrong.
This is fantastic, as usual, midear. ^-^

IKR!? Of course, Nick Jonas has been on Broadway before as Gavroche and Chip when he was a kid. Not a favorite of mine though, I have an aversion to any "Disney" starlet.

And I agree his acting wasn't the best. Maybe when he was younger he was better...

Totally agree. When I found out that Nick Jonas was supposed to be in it, I was like, "What the...?" and then *groan!*. And then I saw it and I was right. He totally does not do the role justice. Give me Michael Ball any day! Especially in 'Empty Chairs, Empty Tables'. I can't help but wonder who asked him to perform in the concert and why. Personally, I think he needs to take singing lessons. I mean, he's got a good voice, I'm sure, but the nasally sound really bugs me. But that might just be me. But, yeah. I was kind of embarrassed for him, too. I was melting as I listened to Ramin.
