Description This is an 18 gauge sterling silver bangle, hand woven. Another one of the easier than it looks type things.

I neglected to give credit to the original designer for the tutorial on this weave when I originally posted this. The designer's name is Linda Chandler, and her web site is jewelrybylinda.com. She has a tutorial for this weave and one other weave as well available on her website; they are somewhat expensive ($20), but I felt they were worth it. They are well written and have lots of pictures to go with the written directions. She also has a book, Woven Wire Jewelry, which has other weaves in it as well. You can get it on Amazon, or at Barnes and Noble. I hope that helps all of you that were interested in learning the weave. It really is not hard to do if yu have some wire working experience. I would not recommend this for a rank beginner to jewelry, but if you've been working with wire for a little while, definitely give it a try and don't be intimidated! I have seen this weave adapted to make rings, neck collars, watch bands, and so on, so it's very veratile. I've also seen several different versions of the weave using a different number of core wires, bi-metal, and different clasp configurations (some absolutely beautiful!). Take a look at Linda's site; she has some great examples of different weaves and adaptations of weaves there.

Thank you! Would you believe it's only the second one I did? I want to try it with more core wires in mixed metals next, and maybe play with the clasp a little, make it more decorative. It's a great weave if you already know how to weave wire, you should try it!

I weave braids only, I can't figure out this weave!
I might try it some day, but for now I'll leave it all to you.

Thank you! Don't laugh, but when I did it I thought I messed up because it was so tight. Now that I've had time to really look at it tho, I like it that way. If I had woven it looser, it would have been much more difficult to keep it consistent.

lol, yeah, that's the nice thing about standardized wire size, the tighter you pull, the closer to exact it is. It's really lovely

mdvannes In reply to elvish-fiend [2008-02-21 22:23:23 +0000 UTC]

It's called a croc weave, and it's in a tutorial from Linda Chandler-jewelrybylinda.com. Unfortunately, it's a rather expensive tutorial, but I felt it was worth it. Thank you for your kind comments!

Wow, that's really evenly woven. Still have yet to learn how to do the woven stuff.

mdvannes In reply to Ceryk [2008-02-21 22:31:23 +0000 UTC]

Take the plunge! It's not as difficult as you think it is. It does require some finger strength, so definitely use dead soft wire. The artist that developed this tute also has a great book called Woven Wire Jewelry which has some great stuff in it tha tis very clear and concisely explained with lots of pictures. Her name is Linda Chandler, and you can find the book on Amazon.

Yeah, I've got some books on it. I tried to do something once made the mistake of not using dead soft, which is one reason why I haven't given it a try again yet. Been so busy doing other stuff. I'll look into that book too though, thanks.

Try working in copper first-it's a little softer than silver, and if you screw something up, you won't be as mad at yourself. I used to just jump in and try things in silver, but learned the hard way that it's better to screw up the $1.89 for 100 feet copper wire than the $20 an ounce silver! You should have heard the cursing going on then! Especially with silver prices through the roof now; I'm working more and more in mixed metal with copper and silver, or just plain copper. It's just a beautiful as silver imo, and definitely easier on the pocketbook! Oh, and invest in a good clamp that will not mark your wire-that's the real secret to this. It needs to have a super strong grip. Look at your local hardware store, they should have a good selection. Good luck!

Scrapping something isn't really an issue for me as a jeweler (low level, but none the less a jeweler). I've currently got almost an ounce of silver scrap that I've melted down and am working on making into wire. So any screw ups for me get used for something.

But yeah, I know about metal prices all too well. Spent a lot of money in gold lately. Kind of seems like people don't take you to be a serious professional unless you work in gold or possibly platinum. And they're both way too expensive. 17 and ounce is much more reasonable to me than 900 and 2000 and ounce Minus milling fees and what not of course.
