Description Parallel to the IAR 82, the IAR 83 sought to integrate the BMW 801 radial engine and new front fuselage to the IAR 80 airframe, obtained through imports of Focke Wulf 190 A-8 variants. The new engine provided a substantial boost of over 50% over the K-14 engine, up to 1500hp, but high altitude performance remained limited from its piston-engined counterpart. Several aircraft saw service during the war but most engines were retained as spares for the Focke Wulf's in the fleet. Development was discontinued in favour of regular IAR 80/81 aircraft.

Michael the Brave's Cross, used by the (Royal) Romanian Air Force between 1941-1944. It got replaced with a more standard blue-yellow-red roundel for the remainder of the war, after Romania switched sides.
