Entry for the Witches of East End: Edgar Allen Poe contest

The flow of The Raven is mesmerizing. You can feel the rhythm of the poem breathing in and out with each verse. Poe carries you from stagnation to longing to sorrow to speculation to frustrated rage as effortlessly as floating on the water and feeling the push and fall of every wave.

Lenore and the Raven exist only as they are presented and further reimagined by Poe. Instead of providing insight, Poe's narration and inconclusive speculations only further deepen their mystery. What is the connection between Lenore and the Raven? Was the Raven sent by Lenore? Is the bird some passerby from death's shore who happened upon her there? Or is the Raven the character of vindictiveness, whose physical materialization and singularity of phrase create the perfect, opaque projection for Poe to impale himself while torturing his own mind in craving to understand?

Considering the last, I wanted to explore the idea of the Raven as a personification of Lenore. Not vindictive perhaps in spirit, as it was in Poe's mind in refusing to let her go.

If you haven't watched the Witches of East End, I highly recommend it. It's a fun show with an amazing cast and wonderful storyline. Can't wait to see what they come up with for Poe.
