Not so clever when you end up smearing everything else with grey smudges, but yes it's a fun technique. I think 'real' artists shudder at the thought though.

I find the trick to soft shading is cheap copy paper and a smooth finger for shading. Nice and easy

Serously, this is a very nice drawing. I love the background. it adds to all the motion in the cloth and her hair. She seems supriced, or confused. She's very pretty.
The only think I much sugast is to make the arms/hands not so stiff.
