Description A few years prior to the first French voyage, the Norse had settled large swathes of Arcadia over the preceding three centuries. While late 13th century Vinland and Sumarland were highly cultivated and urbanized, the Arcadia that the Norse found in the year 1004 was entirely alien to any known land. Ice age megafauna roamed Vinland, including Woolly Mammoths. Without indigenous inhabitants, Arcadia possessed dense forests covering nearly all of the surface. In the first century of Norse settlement, megafauna and the forests provided enough nutrition for the settlers, limiting agricultural activity. The depletion of megafauna from a given region provided an impetus for further exploration and settlement of other regions. As the process of exploration unfolded, agriculture and deforestation grew exponentially around earlier settlements. By 1150, most megafauna had been hunted into extinction. With ample land and a mild climate, the Norse population grew to 300,000 by 1290.
